Hello everyone, going to head up to London with a few friends in a few weeks to get some pictures of our cars.

We’re planning to head over to a few different locations at night especially as all the Christmas lights should be on etc..

Not sure exactly what locations we’re going to head to as of yet but I think a few pictures, if possible, with the London Eye for example in the background would be really cool, especially at night with it all lit up. So thats the kind of thing I’m aiming for!

My question for you guys is can you give me any tips to create the best night photography? Of course I want the photos to come out as well as they can and I’ve not really got any experience with night photography to be honest so it will be a first!

I don’t have any lights unfortunately so is there any other way? I’ve heard of the light painting before where you get a torch for example and leave the camera on a long setting whilst painting the light over the car?

Is this a good technique?

Thanks in advance!

I think in London there will be so much street lighting that you won't be able to do light painting. I might be wrong but for a light painting you will want a longish shutter speed.

Have a look in the "tutorial" section. There's info on shooting cars & light painting.

I don't know London that well but I'd be surprised if you can get The Eye in the background!

Good luck though

You should be able to get the Eye in the BG if you're out late enough. Whether you get moved on before you're done is another matter...

With a bright enough light source you can lightpaint a light-coloured car in any location including urban/ streetlit settings. The darker the car's paintwork, the harder it becomes- but with some careful positioning (and some PP) you can let the streetlights alone do the job.

Read through my tutorial as suggested above, if you can't find it on TP it's linked in my sig. If you've got any other queries stick them in the "Transport" section and me or the other regular posters will try and answer them :)

Yeah we're gonna head out pretty late so will give it a go, if we get moved on we get moved on no biggie..

Thanks for the info and tips though guys, much appreciated!

Here's the kinda shots in London I'm hoping to get.. these aren't my pictures by the way they are just pictures I have came across on the internet!

So that kinda location for the London Eye? Does anyone else have any ideas for cool locations we can get cars to in London?

And these two are amazing, not sure if they are even in London or not but love the idea and style..

Was there 2 nights ago trying some low light shots, you can do the Eye if your discreet, go late at night when its quiet, there is CCTV everywhere, so LEO is watching, keep it low key and try not o attract attention. Also try The Dome from the east.
