Yes
done landscape work in past, only limited knowledge on night photography.
what i would like to do is night time village shots from high advantage points,
so street lights in photos, plus stars.
so thinking what type of filter will i need? or do i need a filter? will the street lights
stop me from getting stars in?.

Why use a filter? To filter out what?

Night time shots are best done while it is still fairly light. If you can no longer see well, your camera will not see well either. I would doubt you would easily get street lights and stars in one shot - light pollution stops the stars from being visible. To have a good chance, I would suggest HDR.

I have thought about using an ND grad upside down but not tried it yet. You do need really clear air so that the light pollution is not too scattered and to go wide so that you get stars above the light pollution. I think you will always blow the street lights but as long as they are small dots I don't think it matters. You also need to bring out the stars in Post, I have found a LR grad filter with increased contrast works.

I think that, if you want a clearly defined village AND stars in the same night-time shot, that you might need to blend multiple exposures in post processing.

In a single shot, the length of exposure you'll need to get stars will most likely blow out anything lit by street-lights.
yes , I thought i might need to blend shots to get what I'm looking for, there are filters for artificial light apparently ,they seem
to have a pink tinge to them ,looks like i'll go down the multiple exposure route.. thanks all.
