Hi I am new to sports photography and wondered what the best setting s are likely to be for team shoot under lights for my lads final on Wednesday evening.?
Just purchased canon 70-200 L f2.8 IS Ii for these types of events in low light.
Don't want to get this bit wrong!! As no second chances.
know the action will be a bit of trial and error?

Well for a start a 70-200mm on a crop body is too long for team photos

At the end of my son's last league game this year, one of the mum's wanted a group shot.

So she lined them up.

Well I had on a 200mm with a 1.4x extender. The kids were on about the half way I line.

I ended up between the posts and about 20 yards back...

I'd agree, a 70-200 is a bit long. I use a 24-70L for mine, or even a wide angle. You'll probably have to use the 70mm. Any longer and you'll have to shout your instructions really loud! CHEESE! SMILE! Flash might also be helpful for posed shots, but not with a 70-200 I think!

Ok should I use 50mm 1.8. Or kit lens 18-55 don't forget under floodlights cheers

If you use flash for the team and presentation pics it wont matter about the floodlights, just set ISO 400 and iTTL will take care of the rest.

And what settings sorry if I sound dumb but want to get it right and not b****r up

50mm will be fine unless you need or want the flexibility of the 18-55mm, if youre really not sure just bang it in AV and set to f/5.6, fire off a quick test shot, chimp and then set exposure compensation as required

Even simpler, if youre shooting Nikon stick your camera on "P" mode at ISO 400 and the flash will take care of everything else.
