i have a nikon d5000, which i believe i am correct in saying is a crop sensor.
i have the kit 18-55 lens, and a tamron 70-300 lens,
but im looking for something a bit faster for indoor use, as i have a couple of weddings to go to this summer.
would anyone recommend the 35mm f1.8 nikkor lens for my camera?
and do you have any pics taken with one?
and finally, how would it compare to a nifty fifty?

I can't compare the 35 to the nifty 50 as I've never tried one, but you'll certainly have all bases covered with that set of lenses. the only thing I would add into your considerations is the price difference, if you're anywhere near as slow as me at manual focusing you'll want to have the af-s version of the fifty (to be able to autofocus with your body) which is about another hundred quid more that the 35mm.

At a wedding I went to recently, I found that I used the 70-300 most of the time, with the 35mm only coming out for the evening when the light levels were lower and everyone was indoors and hence not so far away.

edit: having said that If I was the main photographer rather than just a guest, I think the fifty would be worth the extra outlay for doing the formal portraits without being so close to the subjects

get the 35 1.8, forget the 50 1.4 as it's gonna be too expensive :bang:

there was another similar post on this earlier so i'll say the same here, get the 35mm, its a fantastic lens for the money and great in low light

thanks for the quick replies guys,
i think my mind is made up, im gonna go for the 35 1.8,
its so much cheaper than the 50 1.4, and to have 3 people tell me to go for it is probably enough for me.

the nikkor 50mm 1.8 is legendary for its sharpness (many canon users have adapted it) and its perfect for portraits. i do go for the niffty fifty
