I'm going to see The Overtones in Blackpool in December and plan on trying out my new lens, I've used if for a couple of portrait shoots and I'm happy with it although did find not zooming at first quite strange. Just wondering about settings, we're actually on the front row so will have no obstacles, obviously won't be using flash so what are the best approximate settings.

Any advice appreciated.

PS I have used my camera at the venue before so shouldn't have a problem using my camera.

It really depend on light but shooting wide open at 1.8 maybe your choice but it all depend on light, maybe stop down to 2.8 (it all depend on light etc).

Since you shooting at 50mm on x1.6 crop which is equv to 80mm i would say get the shutter speed at least or above 1/80 sec if possible.

That means if light is bad you need to wide open the lens and up the iso accordingly.

Only take that as guideline because without seeing the venue, time, light condition etc is hard to say .....

I probably wouldn't bump up my ISO to 3200 on a 50D unless you're really pushed to.

If you can shoot at 1/250 sec you can afford to come down to 125 and ISO 1600. It all depends on the lighting, but try not to push pass ISO 800 if you can get at least 1/80 (as the other poster mentioned).

Also, depending on where the stage is, you may find your 50mm too long for stuff right in front of you. You may want to bring a wider lens just in case?

Bear in mind your shutter speed is the priority here as you need to be able time get a sharp shot. Therefore, you will want a shutter speed that can freeze the movement of swinging arms and heads etc - you determine what this is on the day but it most likely will not be below 1/200th.

Aperture should come down before ISO goes up. If it were good lighting then I'd consider aperture more but you are going to be looking at getting the best quality shot in minimal light.

Think like this:

Imaging the speed you want to get a sharp shot.

Start at base ISO and allow more light through your lens before increasing the sensitivity to all of that gathered light by increasing your ISO.

I quickly google'd The Overtones and saw 'vocal harmony group' was not sure they'd be dancing around and such (but may be wrong). I think you'll quickly realise your shutter speed is not fast enough if you start getting motion blur. I went to watch the Olympic Taekwondo and 1/250 was about right. Not sure the 'vocal harmony group' will be moving faster than them ;)

I agree though with the above, aperture coming down first then ISO up.

Ah ok I was thinking there maybe instruments etc so if not then perhaps that is a bit quick.

Thanks very much guys that's very helpful. The Overtones do some dancing but it's pretty minimal, they are a vocal harmony group with a very 50s sound although they do cover more recent songs too with their own take.

I'll start of with my 50mm and my only other option is my kit lens 18-55 so will have that in my bag too incase I need to get a wider shot.

:thankyou:

Thanks Phil, I will.

These are some of my first attempt at gig photography, same venue, Blackpool Opera House but on this occasion about two thirds of the way back and using my 55-250mm lens.
