Nifty fifty upgrade?

The usual choice is between the Canon and Sigma. Most reviews seem to place the Sigma ahead of the Canon and the only real argument against the Sigma seems to be Sigma QC.

I went for the Sigma and haven't had any focusing issues at all on either my 20D or 5D. The lens pretty much lives on my 5D.

I've just made pretty much this decision and after much debate I'm going for a canon 1.4 I was very tempted by the sigma but the focus issues and reports of the focus changing when the lens iris closes have been enough combined with the higher price to put me off.

Time will tell if I've made the right call but by going second hand even if I decide to chop in the Canon for the sigma I won't loose much!

The Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 is a great lens, keep it!

Have a look at the Samyang 35mm f/1.4, sells for around £345 new, or cheaper if you do a bit of searching. Fabulous 'fast' lens.

It's an adequate lens, but by no means great ;)

Slow to focus, worse in low light, feels like it could fall apart any minute, at least it is moderately sharp.

If 50mm is a focal length used often, it is well worth upgrading.

To be fair for the price of the 1.8 it takes superb images, personally I actually really like some of the images that I have taken with it, its permanently attached to my second body.

Sold my Canon 50mm f1.4 and replaced it with the Sigma 50mm f1.4, which IMHO is in a different league to the Canon.

Mine was spot on straight out of the box, and now registered with a 3 year Sigma warranty. I would recommend trying lenses before buying, which is why I buy from the high street rather than the internet

It is great when put in perspective, i.e. it is great for £80.

The build quality didn't other me and I would love it if a range of £80 low aperture primes were made available.

If you are still shooting the 60d i would keep the 50 f1.8 and buy a 28mm or sigma 30mm or something around that focal range.

I had to Sigma for a Nikon body and its great. Only problem is that I wanted my 50 lens to be compact and that is something you will not get with the Sigma. I have replaced it with the 50mm 1.8G Nikon.

If you want something faster than your 1.8 and not bothered with size then I would definitely go with the Sigma

Everyone will tell you the Sigma is better - and to be fair it probably is. I've never used one.

But... I love my Canon 1.4 despite it's faults (plastic body, micromotor USM, impact sensitivity due to poor design). I made so many of my favourite shots with it that I can't see myself ever getting rid of it.

Oh don't get me wrong, optically it is the best £80 you can spend bar none.

But it's a lens that when you want to and can afford to upgrade it, for whatever reason, it is good to upgrade.

I had the same dilemma last year and plumped for the Sigma. Had to send two back before getting a good one though.
