Nifty fifty old/new

Hi. I am sure this has been asked-and answered before but here goes.
I am thinking of getting a nifty fifty, due to it's lack of weight and reputation, what I do ask is there any advantage in going for the older metal mount one? are they optically the same? I have the chance to buy either. and although they are cheap I don't want both.
