Hi

The wifes best friend has just had a baby today and we are visiting tomorrow and i've been asked to take a few photo's.

New borns are not really in my comfort zone so wondered if this lens would do the job?
Thanks in advance
Simon

It's great for more creative shots too if you open it up also. I'll add an image in a mo, on the iPhone at the moment.

Edit:
Here you go, with a Nifty fifty you just have to select a focus point carefully to ensure the shallow DoF is where you want it... :)

Thanks for the pointers guys.

Now taking the photo's tomorrow so will pop the results up if it's ok with the childs parent.

Thanks again
Simon

Another thumbs up for the 50mm. I had that and my 5DMKII when my son was born, i got some fantastic shots of him. Mind you, if you are on a cropped sensor, it may be a push!

Canon 500d.

I've told them its not my usual thing and that i'll do my best for them without promising the world.

Going in an hour or so , fingers crossed.

Cheers
Simon

i hope everything went well simon. i'm off tomorrow night to do something similar for a cousin. the baby is 4 weeks old but was SEVEN weeks premature, so it's still pretty small. i'm going armed with a 50mm on a crop sensor also so i'd love to hear how you got on.

Yeh, I agree. Really hope it goes well. Good luck and don't forget to show us the results :)

Thanks that helped me too.
I have been wondering if you would have to use flash indoors, and if so, doesn't baby end up looking like a rabbit caught in the headlights? Minus the big furry ears of course!

I love my 50mm f1.8 bargain of the century. I use it all the time for pre school portraits outdoors at f2.2.

Once again thank you for the advice.
I think i've done ok just going to do some editing to the pics and put them on a disc and give to the parents over the weekend.
Once they have the shots i'll put a couple up just doesn't seem right to put them on here before mum and dad have seen them.

Cheers
Simon

PS good to see that my original post has helped other as well:clap:

Cheers

ok... errrrrrr... what does that mean then? "on a crop sensor"... I keep seeing that statement and don't have a scooby-doo what it means

Simon - am sure you'll have done a fab job and look forward to seeing some of the pics after baby's MaMa and PaPa have given the okeydokey :)

Most digital bodies have a slightly smaller sensor than the area than that exposed with film bodies. For example Nikon D40, 60, 70, 80, 100, 200, 300 are all like this and so are called crop bodies. However the D700, D3, D3s and D3x are full frame bodies as there sensor represents the same area as exposed on 35mm film bodies. Or at least extremely close. So on a crop sensor body the image projected through the lens onto the sensor is a bit bigger than the sensor so the outer parts of the image is lost/cropped. In other words the field of view is not the same, it is as if you have zoomed in a bit. Most have a crop of about 1.5 so a 50mm lens would appear to have the field of view of a 75mm lens (1.5 x 50) hope that simplified answer helps. Do a search it is covered a few times

Then nifty fifty's ace. Natural window light and from f2.2 is very sharp.

would also like to see some, i'm trying to figure out what lens to get when i get my body replaced abd i'm primarily interested in photograpging our young son

Here's a couple I took a few months back, not a new born though, this guy was moving around a lot, on a crop sensor (D300) with the Nikon f1.8 50mm

I find the 50 is fine for getting up close to babies and children, even on a full frame. You don't need much room too shoot a baby, these were taken on mum and dad's bed.

Looking forward to seeing the fruits of your labour.

Love that first image Lensflair.

Agree on the first image lens flair, how did you light it if you don't mind me asking?

Babies are beautiful to take pics of.

Use a nice big fluffy towel, just makes the newborn picture feel even more, fluffy and newborn :)
