so I have been using iMovie on my iMac for about a few years now, and after getting a 550d to play about with some video I am looking to make the next step from a SW perspective. Photography is my background, so all the video stuff is quite new to me. I like the iMovie interface etc, but I want to delve a little deeper now.

What would people recommend as a decent next step up in terms of editing SW for video?

I'm upgrading my Photoshop SW soon, so might lump up for the pack that includes After Effects (unless that is a step too far?)

Cheers.

If you want to stick with Apple then Final Cut Pro X is the next natural step, or if a move to Adobe is on the cards then Premiere Pro will meet all of your NLE needs.

After Effects is a "Special Effects" application and would be used with Premiere Pro not instead of it.

Cheers pal. Appreciate the info

Final Cut Pro X does share quite alot of it's functionality with iMovie, but it can be a pain if you want accuracy. Take a look at Adobe's offerings! As Paul has said, Premiere Pro is an awesome bit of software, I've actually converted from FCPX to Premiere after honing my skills in FCP7!

Thanks every much mate.

Both Adobe and Apple do trials of both programs. I came from iMovie like you but stuck with FCPX. it seemed more intuitive than Premier, but it is down to personal preferences.
Try each and see what you prefer.

I must say I find the Colour Board that Apple use for colour correction a bit of a pain. However there is an plug in called HY-FX, which gives you exposure and colour controls not dissimilar to Lightroom that you can get, only$25 ( that's about £16) much better.

Have a look at fcp.co. It's a resource site for Final Cut users, also check out the Mac Break Studio shorts from the guys at Ripple training ( fcp.co, post them and they are available via iTunes) very useful info
