I still have a mag that I like to read in paper form, Whitelines, a snowboarding mag. The (just larger than) A4 format and good print quality really makes the most of the brilliant photography. Yes, digital images on tablets and other screens do look good but there's something about the imagery in the mag just feeling right. Plus, the quality of the journalism is brilliant, as is the design.
Working on magazines for over a decade ( but not anymore) I can now honestly say that cheaper paper stock has really dented the feel of quality on many mags and the general 'same old, same old' journalism has done nothing to make many mags appeal, especially when it comes to tuition all mags... That info is now out there on the web, easily accessed and there's more choice. The cost of paper has also pushed mag prices up and that in turn has led to a massive drop in quality.
I fear for those who I know who still work on mags... The talented guys will adapt and move on but these days there are too many inexperienced jounos, taken on because theyre cheap, who are disposable and that's reflected in the quality of what's on the newsstand...
