Hello all,

We are off down to Newquay tomorrow for a small holiday. Taking all the kit down, and have hired a 400mm f5.6 from lensesforhire (brill service btw).

Have you guys and girls got any suugestions of places to visit. Not been there before, however want to make the most of it.

The zoo is at the top of our must visits.

Any information much appreciated.

Subscribed because I'm wanting to go down soon. :D

Thanks for the links.

We are going to venture up to Padstow, down to Crantock and further up to Port Isacc etc.

its not all that far from st ives, penzance and lands end:)

Port Isaac is not far from you and is where they make the Doc Martin tv series and still retains it's fishing village identity, well worth a visit, and don't forget the Eden project is pretty close.

Granted they are not actually in Newquay but not that far away either.

If you get a chance have a meal at Rick Stein's St Petrocs restaurant, bloody brilliant and not too pricey.:)

There is also a excellent bike ride from Padstow to Camelford along the Camel river trail, Bikes can be hired at either end.

Have a nice holiday.

*edit*oops I see Port Isaac is already on your list

I went years ago! 20 odd actually and Crantock bay is the only place I can really remember.. I remember seals being on the beach really early in the morning too..

If you're venturing away from Newquay, I would certainly recommend Padstow as I would Wadebridge which is about five miles further inland.

After visiting Port Isaac, if you wish to travel further along the north coast, then Tintagel and Boscastle are also very popular tourist attractions, as is St. Ives (travelling the other way).

On the south coast, then Looe, Polperro, Fowey, Mevagissey and St. Mawes are extremely picturesque and tourist hotspots. If you're in Penzance, then travel a little further down to Mousehole.

Thanks for the suggestions guys.

We check in on Monday and check out on Friday, so really only three full days to explore.

We will see what we can fit in, and will report back here with photos :)

In Newquay - the zoo's only a small affair, but its half a day out and worth it for the bats..:).

There is a seal sanctuary, and an owl sanctuary, the owl sanctuary is great they have loads of BOP and have several displays where they fly the birds with lures.

Porth, Porth island, Whipsderry can be nice and quiet scenic beaches/coastline.

Surfing, kitesurfing\activities at Fistral, Tolcarne is a family beach in the town with the house on the rock and Lusty Glaze has a load of colourful beach huts.

Couple of miles up the coast is Watergate bay and J olivers restaurant.
Couple of miles down the coast is Crantock or West Pentire, and Holywell bay.

Went last weekend.

Visited Bedruthan Step at sunset, Lost Gardens of Helligan (Not really my cup of tea, TBH) and St Micheals Mount for the sunrise.

St Micheal was a bit of a mistake as our location put the sunrise on the wrong side of the Mount (live and learn) - There`s a RSPB wildlife reserve right next door.

Bedruthan - Got some cracking pictures there.

Fistral Beach - got some really good sunset shots.

Helligan?

Well, I wouldn`t bother TBH. Not enough variety, and alot of the flowers are at the end of their life.

A few I took.

Crantock is a great place and beach to photograph, theres a caravan site just above and some stunning sunsets of the bay can be had. Other thing i can think is try fistral beach for some water sports action thats usually were the best surfers tend to "Hang out". Crantock is also a very very traditional village and is loverly on a nice summers day.

Last thing i can think is on Friday you may get some VW's as the annual run to the sun starts on the saturday so some of the early birds may arrive, some great olden vw's to get some shots of.

If macro and plants is your thing then the place you want is Terrance gardens, these are very well kept and at this time of the year and simply loverly. Good selection of different plants and roses.

Last place for you is the harbour, seals are around this time of year and if you go around tea time when people come in from fishing trips they feed the seals some of the catch and the seals do a bit of showing off. You may also if you are luckily get some of the new quay rowing team out and would be a great opportunity to use the 400mm as they are coming back into the harbour.

been going to newquay for 14 years now every year without fail so its like a 2nd home now.
