Hi all. I wonder if anyone can help. I am looking to get a camera which takes shots instantly when the button is pressed. I want this so I can take action shots of wildlife etc. Can anyone give me some advice as to which sort of camera to buy. I am totally new to photography so any help/advice will be gratefully received. Many thanks.. Dan

Hi and welcome.
I'd hate to dampen your enthusiasm, but I think you'll need to learn to walk before you can run.
Action shots of wildlife is one of the most demanding disciplines within photography.
A DSLR with a very long focal length is the order of the day.

I suggest you have a long look through the Animals and Birds section.
Take note of the kit used, but before splashing out I'd advise you to learn photographic basics.
If you feel that you want to grasp what photography is all about come back and shout. Folk here will direct you to interactive websites and helpfull books.
I hope this helps.

You need to be looking at a DSLR. If you have ever used a digital camera you will know there is whats termed "shutter lag" a delay between pressing the button and the camera taking the picture.. I presume you know that hence the question.. So it's a DSLR you need

However a DSLR is just a camera. You then need to buy lenses and such as wildlife/sport you get into the more expensive lenses as you need longer focul lenght

So first job is look at a DSLR you can afford taking into consideration the lens you would need and price.. Use the search button on this forum as all your questions have been asked.. but thats not to say dont ask them again if stuck :)

Hi Dan,, :welcome: to TP; and Happy New Year :).

Hi Dan, Welcome to TP.
Arclight, kiplex and MagicMynx have given you some good advice already.
Have a look at some of the examples on the forum and you will see some outstanding shots.
I have been into photography for years but it wasn't until I joined this forum last year I realized just how much I needed to learn.

The best way to learn is to get tips and practice.
Post your pictures and ask for advice. People at TP are really helpful, and don't hold back, we've all been in the same boat.
If you see an image and think "wow how did they do that" ask.

As far as your first camera goes there are some good reasonable priced one with good zooms built in to learn the basics. Once you have a good grip of the basics, practices your field craft and decided what sort of shots interest you. then you can start looking for a camera and lens to suit your needs. You may well find out over time that you like walking in the woods and taking woodland scenes or closeup's of mushrooms and flowers as opposed to close-ups of birds and wildlife.

Good luck with your photography ... looking forward to some pics.
