First I would like to say this is a fantastic forum with lots of great advice and discussions. Was a nikon user and went to Canon, but as I am so accustomed to how Nikon works I am back with a D700 :)
 
Hi and welcome. As a relative new-comer to DSLR, I would be interested to hear why you chose to go back to Nikon. I haven't really set my tent in either camp yet although I find Nikons easy enough to navigate- I just feel like I may be missing something by not using Canon?
 
I had a D90, D7000 but then I wanted Full Frame to make use of low noise at higher ISOs. The 5D Mark II was the cheapest and one of the best entry level FF models. Only thing is I miss a lot of the dedicated dials and buttons of the Nikon and find it hard to operate a Canon after using Nikon for so long. The Canon is a lot simpler to use but I reckon when your used to a brand best to stick at it.
 
Also both Canon and Nikon are great, cant go wrong with either. invest in good glass and improve your technique, cant make amazing shots without it :)

Interesting, thanks. I do find the controls intuitive on a Nikon so I suppose the safest bet would be to stick with them. I'll be looking primarily for a D90, maybe a D7000 or D300 at the right price- any tips on which would be the best 'bang for buck'? Full frame isn't something my bank balance can deal with at the moment!
 
You can find a lot of decent low shutter count D300 at around £600 mark. A newer and better D700 is still costing mid £800s. D90s new are about 529, not sure how much second hand.
 
Good stuff. If you want a zoom to fill upto the 55m end try the tamron 17-50mm 2.8 Great piece of glass and offers fantastic IQ
 
Tamron don't do VR, I thin you are maybe referring to the Nikon zoom in that range. The Tamron 17-50 2.8 offers similar IQ at a cheaper price. used to have one on my old D90 and was the best money I spent.
