Hi there,
I currently have a studio set up with 2 soft boxes but want to set it up for newborn photography with just one x-large soft box (up to 190cms ) and a good light.
Can anyone give me any help on which company would be best to go to and what watt light would I need?
Thanks ;)

And what if you don't have any where suitable to use natural light?

I use 2x Lencarta Elite Pro 300's one as main light and the other as a bit of fill.

Even Sarah Wilkes is using studio lights now she has a dedicated studio to do it.

Studio lighting can be just as nice and soft as natural light if you know how to use it. :)

Why aren't the ones you already have suitable?

If you have lights already then anybody who tries to sell you a different fit should be regarded with suspicion ;)

The lights I have don't seem bright enough (250) so when I did a course with the wonderful Sarah Wilkes, her set up is one large octobox and a 500 flash head, and when I took my photos with her set up, they turned out much better with that style of lighting!
Is it just me??? Could be :bang:

How big are the soft boxes you have?

I use just a 100cm x 100cm soft box without any trouble... you just have to have it in nice and close and with the camera peaking just underneath it and the resulting light is as big and soft as you like.

I very much doubt Sarah uses her lights on full power. I maybe wrong however, I'm just assuming.

As said, get the right modifier and the placement of it is important. :)

Seeing as you went on a course with Sarah, why not ask her for a little help on it? I'm sure she'd be able to pass a little info on for you. :)

+1 that is why you pay for a mentoring course at the end of the day and if you want to achieve that exact look she would be the one to tell you.

I use a set of el500s never have them anywhere near full power.

A 100cm softbox is huge relative to a baby.

That's like using a 4m octa on your average fashion model.

250 w/s from less than a foot away if fairly bright - even when you've diffused it a couple of times.

In fact a 100 X 60 with a speedlight does me nicely.
