Looking to buy a studio light & 120" or bigger Octabox for Newborn photography & ideally want to be able to do family portraits (6 people) with one light

300 budget or less!

A Lencarta 120 Octa, stand, 200Ws head and remote will come in under your budget. Great after sales service and support too. Also, browsing their website you can learn lots.

You could save some on that by scouring EBay and foregoing the support.

Would I be able to do family portraits with this also? I was thinking 400w

I often shoot with one light (400w D-Lite) in a large 1.2m octa... but personally, I wouldn't attempt to shoot a 6 person family portrait with anything less than two lights.

Well I was thinking about a large family with 6 :) 4 people minimum.

Shall take a look at the D-Lite but think its out of my price range inc an octa (bigger the better)

The SmartFlash 200 has enough power for a group of 6, you'll probably need to up the ISO to 400-800, but with any modern digital camera that won't be a problem.
We still have a few of our 150 Octa softboxes available at half price http://www.lencarta.com/sale/150cm-octa-folding-pro-softbox but they do take up a lot of space and I don't recommend their use in small rooms, especially if the ceiling is low.

The make of the lights is almost insignificant.
How would you arrange a group of 6 to light them well with one light.

It's not about model of flash or power, it's about creating the image in your head. How's it lit?

The only issue with the D-Lite (excellent product, I have 4 of them) is that there is a weight limit over the mid-high ranges. It will only take the 135 Rotalux max. One of mine has developed a crack and I do wonder whether that's from over load bearing with my lencarta large strip box which is probably heavier than the Rotalux mentioned with the grid fitted. I have glued it and so it's fine but worth noting.

PS. For newborns anything over 90cm is probably overkill IMO, given the size of the subject.
