hey all, im new to the world of DSLRs and am looking into getting a canon 350D second hand, this comes without a lens atm so would also need to look into getting one aswell (duh)

i am keep to take as much advice as i can get form here and so am opening this to people to make comments and tell me things like

a) how much i should expect to pay for i) the body and ii) the lenses

b) which / what kind of lenses i should be looking for (for the sporty MTB / sailing / skiing action shots) and also some close up stuff

c) what i should be looking for in a first time SLR

thankyou all

C. A camera that is comfortable to hold and use, so play with it before you buy

B. What you talk about requires lenses from wide to telephoto, so consider a couple of zoom lenses to cover what you want, while not running up a large lens bill (you will)

A. dont know about canon values but others will

Oh Welcome

Hi and welcome,

A - I'm not sure about prices for body's but lenses see below

B - I shoot a lot of the same things as you and it sounds like you will need a range of lenses:

Mountain biking - quite often low light, so a 50mm f1.8 would be good around £60 new, a good general lens, also the kit lens (18-55mm) would be a good bet at around £30 s/h

Sailing - Shooting from the shore you will want something long, a good budget option is the Canon 75-300mm (I have one in the F/S section), if you are in the boat or shooting boat to boat either of the two lenses I mentioned for MTB would be fine.

Skiing - My main lens for snowboard shoots is my 50mm, I find that fisheye shots are over played, but it is sometimes good to get in close with a wide angle (kit lens), for on the mountain a any of the lenses mentionned would be fine.

C - Ergonomics are important as stated above, also if you know anyone else with a DSLR it is useful to go for the same brand as them to swap lenses/flashes etc...

50mm f1.8 - £60 as stated

see how you get on with that I'd say. 85mm f1.8 is also good price/performance @ £200, but you'll probably want a zoom as said. The 90-300 is marginally better than the 75-300, bother very cheap and will get you going.

Once you find out what ranges you're using most and what other aspects are most important (like IS or f2.8) you'll be able to make better choice of uprated lens and probably pass on what you've bought already near enough at cost.

HTH

i have been looking round, i can find the 50mm and the 75-300mm lenses ok but i havent yet been able to find a kit lens (18-55mm) that comes without a camera.

and advice of where i could find this?

A wanted post on here (or do you need 100 posts to be able to do that?) or eBay, there must be plenty of people upgrading them...
