Edit My Images
Yes
After frustrations of trying to Edit photograph's on my trusty win laptop, I've decided to invest in a iMac pro 27 (2017) my initial thoughts after doing my first edit using photoshop was wow, then it was time to save...

I can't seem to save to a folder of my choice in iphoto, it will put it in the main library Then I can't move it to the folder, I've managed to do this one, then decided to add another, where this photo has gone, goodness knows, I thought I'd put it in the photo library but it isn't showing up. I normally like to load photo's onto the hard drive, then edit/delete for final folder destination

Another problem

Even though my cf card reader is mounted, I can see the photo's pull them up into photoshop etc, iphone can't see it at all, mind you files are RAW files from a canon 5dS!

Now I do have lightroom, which I haven't installed yet, and also bridge which I never used, due to not being able to see the thumbnail being too small to see on my laptop..

So my questions are...

Am I'm missing something really simple in iphones, that would enable me to save easier and quicker...

Is it better to use lightroom to import my photographs would this solve problems for me .

Is using bridge better

Or is there another program, which will load my photographs to where I want them to, more akin to how I'm used to with windows?

Hi Jo

If you right click on your pictures folder in Finder you should get an option to 'Show package contents'. If you scroll down the new window that opens you'll have an option to open 'Masters'. That should have your original files by date, file number etc.

The other option is that if you've 'lost' an image you could search in finder either by name or file type and, once found, you can make a note of the destination folder and location.

Not sure why the CF card isn't showing in photos though I'm afraid - is it opening the 'import file' option when you plug it in?

I'm not so au fait with other options like LR or bridge but will be interested in other comments as I'm looking to improve my workflow.

I've not use Photo's for some time as I prefer to use lightroom. iPhoto and Photo's tend to use "albums" to store the images which I find to be a real pain. Others may find it ideal. As you have Lightroom I'd opt for that' It allows you to store your images in the way you want, not Apples.

Adobe do some excellent video's using Lightroom. Check out those by Jullianne Kost. Your initial approach to Lightroom is important as it tend to determine how your images are stored and displayed. Checkout the starting with `Lightroom video's Here's the link

Thanks both of you

iphoto's, still not getting there as such, so think I'm going to give up on this one, I spoke to my daughter who's loves her mac, and she seems to think that it only kinda of works with anything apple!

My structure on my odd win10 lappy for my photographs, was based on which camera I'd used. So had folders for my 5ds and 7dmk2 then main sub folders, then to the shoot. One separate folder for all loading shoot's in, when I haven't time to sort out.

So I think I shall try using Lightroom for importing my photo's, and using bridge, hopefully with a much bigger monitor I shall actually be able to see thumbnails which is why I stopped using it.

TBH you should completely over-ride iPhotos/Photos and all the rest of the OS image management/control systems and take charge properly. Import your images directly from the card if you can, or via the camera & bridge if you cannot, and save them into folders that you have created in a similar way to when you had a windows computer. If you *must* use iPhotos then you can point it at the folders, but do all your image management and processing through Lightroom, which is a properly professional package and will be much more powerful. Do your culling and selection through Lightroom, giving your images keywords so you can find them later and using the star system to differentiate those to be developed from those not wanted.

Don't bother with Bridge. Lightroom gives you thumbnails , which are much larger than those Bridge uses. Tou can use your Windows system if you want. Lightroom allows you to use keywords (if you want), plus you can sort by date, camera, fil name, and lots more. Plus you can batch rename with ease.
Before you start in anger, may I suggest you start with a trial catalogue. Lightroom uses a database to record your actions. Including actions such as colour balance tonal changes etc. If you import all your images into Lightroom, and then decide that you want to change things, then you've got to start all over again. Try with a a hundred or so images first then if you are happy fine. If not you can delete the database and start again.

I would think your Windows structure would work well. Unless you have a specific reason for segregating the cameras, I'd use the shoot as the folder structure. Lightroom will let you select, from the metadata search ( it's dead easy) criteria such as Camera , lens and even date. So you can get very specific, if you need to.

buying a mac and using Iphotos for anything .....WTF

Sorry for being out of topic, Jo. When and where did you get your iMac Pro?

It hasn't been released yet, I suspect this is a normal iMac.

Curry's, as to is it or isn't a pro, not 100% sure apart from I'm now missing an Arm and Leg :(

I decided to stick with Lightroom for importing and also using Photoshop when I need a bit more than Lightroom editing.

An update to how I'm fairing

Well, I'm converted to apple, once I got my head around it's logic that is.

The screen has been calibrated which is something I couldn't fully do with my laptop, and being able to get all the photograph on screen at a size that I can see all clearly, has not only helped my choosing and editing of individual photographs, but actually improved how I take photo's in the first place, due to being able to see depth of field, focusing issues much easier and clearer...

Took a bit of faffing to get it to talk to my laptop, but now sorted this which is brilliant as don't have to transfer the photographs from the lappy but can browse and import any I want into photoshop to work on, and having a rummage around I found several gem's unedited etc, which I'd obviously missed at the time.
