Guys/Girls,

I'm very new to the processing scene and have recently installed LR5 on my Mac.

This may be a bit of a dumb question and if so my apologies but ask I must.

I shoot RAW & Jpeg simultaneously.

I've connected my Canon to my Mac and using the Canon software downloaded the images off my card.

I have on the EOS Utility two images of each shot. One RAW & one JPEG. All is fine so far.

I then open LR5 and only have one image shown. Now I'm confused.

Is the image on LR5 RAW or JPEG. I can't find anything to identify which.

Your assistance would be appreciated. Thanks

If you go into LR preferences, you will see an option, to treat JPEG files next to RAW files, as separate photos.

Thanks John.

Perhaps I'm being thick here, but if I take a shot in RAW and upload it to LR5 does it stay as a RAW?

I ask because I'm sure I have read in all the bumf that accompanies LR that it converts the images to its own format and not in RAW.

Have I missed the plot somewhere?

You have the option to convert, either on import or later, to DNG (Adobe's digital negative) or you can just import the RAW file (your camera's version of RAW).

Thanks David much appreciated. Finding it all a little confusing at present.

I use Canon gear for my imagery and as a result have EOS Utility software from them.

As I have a Mac I have iPhoto & Aperture from Apple.

Now with Adobe I've got PS II and now LR5.

Should I bin some of these?

You no longer need EOS utility. Use either LR or Aperture to import and catalogue your pics. Use LR for 99% of most of your processing too. Just drop out to PS if you need advanced layer based editing..

I think you could stop using almost all of the software that you've listed now that you have LR, and you certainly don't need to use the EOS utility any more. Lightroom can take the photos straight from the camera into whatever LR folder you tell it to, skipping the EOS utility step completely. Not sure why you want to shoot JPEG and RAW together, but it will import them all along side each other.

when you import into LR you are given a number of options, which include "copy", "copy as DNG" and "Move". Copy and move are pretty self-explanatory really; copy will copy the images from your camera to LR, and move will copy them and then delete them off your camera. The othe option, copy as DNG, will copy the files to LR and then convert them to Adobe's DNG (digital negative) format. This is Adobe's proprietary image format that is essantially their own version of a RAW file, which is compatiable with loads of image editing software. This link explains the difference between DNG and RAW much better than I have

Thanks Carl. Very informative. I've also downloaded an Ebook on LR so that's my Easter sorted.

There's some great YouTube instructional videos that are worth looking at. There's a bit of a learning curve for LR, but not much!

i coudnt get on with lightroom at first and deleted it when the trial ended ...but gave it another go after a little whilst and im so glad i did, woudnt be without it now, use it much more photoshop et al

I did exactly the same thing, stick with it, it'll be worth it in the end.

Hi Chris. Yes I do like Aperture but my only complaint is that sometimes and I don't know why, but it takes an age to be able to go from one image to another. I think someone put on this thread above that they had that same issue. I'm going to keep it as I will iPhoto and EOS Utility. I've downloaded a book from the App Store on LR5 and so far found it very informative and presented in language that the techno phobe in me can understand.

Hi Bruce,thanks for the reply.
thats strange that not only you but others have found going from 1 image to another slow.I have a 2012 iMac,i exchanged the ram for 16 gig of samsung, now wether it is the amount of ram I'm not sure but I've never ever had anything but instant update to next photo
or anything else, its lightning fast, this is with full size raw and jpegs and full page too.,hmm very strange.
Let us know how you get on as i may still install LR5 also.
regards
Chris

My Mac is a MY13 with 32Gb of RAM & 3TB of the other stuff so I know it's not that. As I said above I'm going to keep it. The only thing I'm wondering about is whether it's Aperture itself as I've had it a few years.

wow so it sounds like its an issue with your installation of Aperture as long as all your other programs work well. have you tried removing it and then doing a fresh install?

Never even gave it a thought. Thanks
