Hi All,

Its been a busy start to the year for me and as a result I've not even begun playing with the Xmas presents:shake:. Here's what I have and what I hope to use them for:

Canon 40D with a 4gb Sandisk IV Extreme CF card (ebay £360)
EFS 18-55mm kit lens
Canon 35-80mm USM
Canon 35-135mm USM
Canon 100-300mm USM (all lenses courtesy of Dad )

I don't really know where to start with this all to be honest:thinking:. I really like waterfall/water scenes with a longer shutter speed to soften the water. I would also like to take family portraits (maybe look to get a DIY home studio type thing) and also like to take sports shots (mainly mates on the golf course and some sunday morning football stuff).

Could anyone give me some pointers as to what lens will be best for what and any basic techniques I should read up on first. The advise on the forum I've read so far has been great and I just really want to get out and start taking some shots.

Thanks all in advance.

Hi Sam.
Heres what I would do with the kit you have. Others may have differing ideas, but hey, It's just my opinion!
First I would sell the kit lens, and either the 35-80 or the 35-135 and buy an 18-55mm IS, and a 55-250mm IS. The IS is Image Stabilizer. Also think about a Nifty Fifty, (50mm 1.8 prime) The 100-300 will be ok for sports, if you need to go longer you could invest in a 1.4 Canon extender.
For lanscape use the 18-55 or the 35-80/35-135, also good for portraits. Nifty fifty good for low light situations. 55-250 IS is a good all round (walkabout) lens.
For your waterfall shots, get a tripod/monopod, it CAN be done handheld (IS will help) but with longer shutter speeds, needs a lot of practice.
Hopen this helps a little.

Thanks for that. I'll certainly give that a good read. I was wondering whether it would be worthwhile selling a lens or two so that's also helped. Nifty fifty was on my radar and I think much further down the line is the 70-200mm f/4 L IS USM!! Good price on amazon today too!!! Much to learn first though. :bonk:
