Hi folks,

Just looking a bit of advice, im currently looking a DSLR.

I plan to shot mainly sports, action pics such as motorsport, bikes in particular.

Can anyone give me suggestions/recommendations of a camera/setup?

Thanks

I have a budget of £5-600

Hey,
I havn't used one personally but I have heard good things about the Sony a77 for sport cause of the high burst rate, but I don't know to much about. £600 Ish for body and lens though.:)

Where can you get a Sony A77 and a lens for £600? Jessops want £1149 for the body on it's own.....

I would personally look to go second hand with your budget, but if you want to buy new then you can get a canon 550d with a 55-250mm lens for just over £600 or pixmania currently have a deal worth looking at - Nikon
D3100 Lens Kit (18-55mm VR + 55-200mm VR) - which you can access via camerapricebuster.co.uk

Thats the two cameras i had been thinking about. But it depends on who your talking to recommend a different brand lol

I don't want to buy something that in 6 months ill have to upgrade from or else something that wont work well with fast action sports such as bike racing.

For what you want mate, you will need more than £500-600.
Really, you will need a Canon 40D, 50D or 60D (some good prices second hand, especially on here) and then A lens that will keep up with fast action. You may find the focus speeds slow on the 55-250 IS and the focal length too short. Maybe the Canon 100-400 but Second hand they go for £700-800 on their own.

So, maybe start with a 40D used and a Canon 55-250 IS, get some practice in with panning etc and then upgrade the lens when you have some more spare cash

Then I can only suggest to upgrade your budget by a couple of grand. The 550D got unofficially branded as the mini 7D and I've got a couple of friends who do motor sports that use this camera and same lens and get fantastic shots. If I could go back to when I was buying my first slr, I would go second hand. You can get great cameras for alot less. Same go's for lenses. If you want to go down the buy new route, I'd say go down to your local camera store and see what offers they have and what takes your fancy. That's probably the better option right now being so close to Christmas they'll have a few offers on :)

I started with the 550D and my subject is motorcycle racing (supermoto) and I was well impressed with it, I used it with the Tamron 70-300 and got some great results i thought

this being one of them...

I had no knowledge at the time of taking this, I was just starting out but was already knew I was gonna be hooked, I use to race but due to injuries and work, I am no longer allowed, the racing exp helps a great deal I think

With that sort of budget I would be tempted to look at a Canon 40D and a Canon 70-300 IS USM. That should leave you a few quid for other essential items such as memory cards, batteries and something to carry it all in.

I can't post any examples from my iPhone but if you look at my Flickr I have a few photos from Donington a while back when
I first got into photography, using that lens with a 350D.

Don't be afraid of buying second hand as you will get loads more for you're money.

Have found out a family member works for canon and can get a 550d with 18-55 lens for £432 or a 600d with 18-55 lens for £473

is that good? anyone know much difference in the two cameras?

Thats a very good price^

600D has the variable LCD, as far as i'm aware that's the advantages of it. Just seen a review of both and yes it's just the screen.

The 550D is a good camera capable of taking some terrific shots with the right lens. The 55-250 IS lens hits well above its weight IQ wise. I got a second hand one from here in immaculate condition for £110. I think there is a few differences between the 550D and the 600D other than just the screen, it would be worth checking out. I've now given my 550D to the wife as I've now got a 7D and a 5DMkII, but I didn't want to sell the 550D as it's such a good performer.

Hi Neill I started out with a canon 400d with a sigma 70-300 lens and got good results in motorsport (bikes) but changed lens for a sigma 18-250 with still good results. but now have a canon 40d which to me feels great in the hand and has a great burst of frames now i'm looking into a new lens maybe 70-200 f2.8 or f4 some stunning shots on this site that just make you want to get better and better.

Shot taken with the 40D and sigma 18-250 cadwell

Hi Neill!

I know I'm new on here but I want to buck the trend on Canon lovers :) I use a Nikon D300s which gives me images like.....

you'll be looking at about £1k for the body and the D300s is very much due for a replacement any time now so you might pick up a bargain if Nikon finally announce the replacement! ;)

cheers

Mongrel very nice shot what lens was you using I think it a lot to do with the let's used.

Cheers guys! Ok, I do agree that the lens helps ... This photo was taken with a nikkor 70-200 2.8. This is my favourite lens :D
