I have just stepped up from point and shoot to DSLR Canon 1000d and doing a short term college course, for my portfolio i need to do under the heading Movement 4 prints 2 showing something taken with a fast shutter speed & 2 showing something taken at a slow shutter speed. Next under Tonal Effects 2 prints - Light on Dark, 2 prints - Light on Light and 2 prints - Dark on Dark. Could someone give me some ideas of shots to take that would show the photographs at the best examples for the headings, remembering i am a novice and still trying to find my way around the camera, all help would be most appreciated. :help:

For movement try panning on a car and a helicopter or a dog running, bird in flight, kid running round in the garden. i asusme they want you to demonstrate the difference between two shots.. eg: helicopter with slow shutter speed, and helicopter withfast shutter speed?

Light on light sounds like it's a high key effect they're after? Do a Google picture search on 'high key' - should give you lots of ideas. Similarly dark on dark sounds like they mean low key? - again Google should help. The others are fairly self explanatory.

Any moving subject will suffice really for your Movement theme, but try a simple person walking. A fairly slow shutter speed will usually freeze everything but the hands and feet which are usually swinging and accelerating faster than the rest of the body.

EDIT.

Doesn't have to be a simple person walking - an intelligent one would be OK too.
