Hi im new to photography and even newer to understanding lighting.
Ive recently had a play in a studio and loved it, however all the lights were already set up for me.
I was looking to set up a home studio to experiment and am unsure on what lighting i need. I have just ordered a YN 468ii speedlite, is it best to buy the rf603 wireless trigger kit as well? should i use flash or continuous lighting, or both?
If i use the speedlite off the camera can anyone recommend a stand?

Im hoping to use it to shoot portraits using my eos1000d

Any advice greatly appreciated. Thanks

This is a good starting point mate!

The yongnuo flashes are reliable and cheap as are the yongnuo triggers!

For light stands konig are nice and cheap for beginners at little over £10!

Setups can be relatively cheap if you go the speedlite route or more expensive if you go the strobe route (lencarta come highly recommended)!

I bought both a shoot through umbrella and a softbox-i prefer the softbox for its more directional light. EBay is a good source for cheap diffusers!

The thing I have quickly learned that often what you do is determined by how much space you have....the bigger the better and even then it's usually not enough lol! The space I have to work with is quite small so I ended up buying the lastolite hilite! The hilite is expensive but was a necessity for me, but it meant I needed at least 3 flashes in my setup!

Just read lots and watch plenty of videos on YouTube!

I'm currently reading a book called the hotshoe diaries which is quite good

I'm very much a beginner but these are some of the things I have gone through in my development!

You need flash (continuous lights are not bright enough) and if it's studio based, with access to mains power, studio flash heads are the way to go (fast recycle times and WYSIWYG modelling bulb).

Prices are similar to hot-shoe guns. See this thread http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=455817
