Hello All!

I thought I'd join up to pick up some much needed tips for photography, and video.

I've had a passing interest in photography since messing around with my Dad's Olympus OM1 when I was growing up. I've never really devoted much time to it though, and would like to change that. I find myself not confident enough toi take the camera out of auto most of the time!

I probably spend more time making (very amateurish) videos these days.

My subjects are usually my family (usual holiday snaps etc), my basketball team (Surrey league team i play for and film to post on YouTube), or cars (active member of the Audi RS246 car club).

I'll post up some links to vids (car and basketball related) once I've accumulated enough posts.

My kit:

Photo: Nikon D5100, 18-200mm and prime lenses. Looking to upgrade to a full frame canon in the near future
Video: Panasonic HCV250 HD camcorder (usually on a monopod), Go Pro Hero, SJ4000 wifi, Macbook Pro for video editing (iMovie)

A few recent sample images. As I said, very amateur! But gives you an idea of the kind of things I take pictures of! Lots of cars!

Hi and welcome.
It seems you're looking for interesting angles with your pics, very refreshing to see. :-)
Oh and nothing magical happens when you come out of auto. (Unless you know how, why and when to do it.)
Any questions just shout up, someone will soon be along.

Thanks for the welcome Graham!

I'll definitely be posting up questions in due course!

Ah, I've just noticed there's a welcome forum! I appear to have posted in the wrong place!

Could a moderator move this thread please? Thanks!

Hi and a warm welcome to TP.
Hope you enjoy yourself here :)

Some very nice machinery there :)

Welcome - why go FF canon from Nikon ? What doesn't the Nikon give you ?

Am guessing you might want a f1.8 lens ( 35mm ) to give a bit more separation between your subject and the background as you're attending car meets ? Pop onto Pistonheads and get involved there - there is a supercar meet at Virginia water next Sunday morning if you're interested ?

Ps - your RS4 is lovely

Thanks on the RS4 complement!

I do actually have a 35mm f1.8 lens, but haven't been using it much, as the 18-200 is just so flexible it lives on the camera all the time! I'll give the prime a go at the next meet - incidentally that'll be Audi Driver International at Castle Combe on Saturday. No way I'll get management approval to be out again the next day! I'm a member on pistonheads but rarely visit as I'm normally on RS246 and mk5golfgti (2nd car is a VW Golf GTi).

I'm a little frustrated with the Nikon's video capabilities. The focus is too slow and dim-witted. I'd like to be able to use my SLR for video (although I'll stick with the camcorder for basketball), but the Nikon really struggles regardless of the subject. So that has me considering a Canon, and at the same time I wonder if it's also worth switching to FF - still need to consider that. I'm thinking about a 6D or 5D mk3, but then the cheaper APS-C 80D looks great for video! Much confusion.

I'll be going to the next meet with the Nikon (with 2 lenses), the camcorder, a pair of action cams, and all the accessories...too much stuff!
