Hi from a Newbie in Glasgow. I'm an English guy who moved north of the border a few years ago now.

I'm a bassist and guitarist and often take pics of the various instruments I own. It really turns into a bit of a "show and tell" through the various internet musical forums. I also work on instruments from time to time and take photos throughout the process so the owner knows what's going on.

I have a little Fujifilm Z3, but found it took me literally 40 shots to get something decent (thank goodness for digital!). Either things weren't lined up right or out of focus; generally a complete mess. My wife (who's been taking photos for years) would come in, line the camera up, take 1 shot (maybe 2), say "all done" and walk out again! How annoying :bang:

So when my wife bought a new camera, I thought I'd try to get to grips with taking photos as well, so I researched in print and on the net, sold a couple of guitars which I wasn't using as much as I used to, and took the plunge.

So I'm learning slowly and finding my way around the camera. It's all a lot of info to take in, but I'm sure it'll all sink in eventually. I've had a read around here already and it seems a friendly place which is a relief for someone starting out.

By the way, if anyone has problems with electric guitars or basses just let me know and I'll try and help you out. Maybe I could get some photography tips in exchange

PS. I have the username 7string as I play a 7 string bass guitar.

the Nikon handbooks that came with my D40, then my D5000, were *rubbish*

try to get a D3100 Manual from Amazon - due out December

indoor close-ups...? - may want to look at a 35mm f1.8 AF-S DX ....cracking lens

Thanks for the words of welcome.

Yardbent - Can you tell me which book it is? I've had a look at Amazon and found 3 possibilities.

Nikon D3100 For Dummies (For Dummies (Computer/Tech)) by Julie Adair King (Paperback - 3 Dec 2010)

Nikon D3100: From Snapshots to Great Shots by Jeff Revell (Paperback - 1 Dec 2010)

Nikon D3100 Digital Field Guide by Wiley (Paperback - 17 Nov 2010)

If you point me in the right direction that would be great.

hi
i wouldn't buy the Dummies ....too basic maybe..?

cannot help on the other 2, as my D40 and D5000 books were by David Busch

no doubt he'll do one, but it's early days maybe

put the question up for other D3100 owners in "Talk Basics" ...?

Hi Mark,

Welcome to the forum mate. There are a few of us not too far from you so if you want or need to know something drop one of us a pm and we'll try to help in any way we can.

Thanks again for the words of welcome.

Photography is a massive subject, but at least the pics I'm taking are not in Auto mode. So a tiny step forward there :D

I'll keep an eye open for David Busch and start a new thread as advised.

Great shot! She's got the foot-up-on-the-monitors pose already.

Can't go wrong with a Fender Precision. My avatar is small pic of my main bass.

If you ever need a hand with setups etc just let me know!

Cheers

She's like a cross between Suzi Quattro and (in that pose) Steve Harris.
