I have come to realise that I need a proper tripod rather than my lightweight Velbon Luxi L. I see that the Redsnapper and ball head gets some good reviews on here. How do they compare to the competition Manfrotto, Gitzo etc and are they really as good?

I've just received a Redsnapper ball head and would highly recommend it I also have several Manfrotto heads including the 486 again highly recommended but the redsnapper equiv from manfrotto would cost twice as much :| as for tripods I have two Manfrottos and love em both the 190XPROB is excellent, but I guess someone here has a Redsnapper to comment on.
I ended up paying ~£130 for a Manfrotto tripod and head (see sig) which I'm thrilled with but having seen all the positive comments about Redsnapper if I was in the same situation I'd give them a go.
Hi Dave, i was in the same position a few months back and i chose a manfrotto 190xprob with 804rc2 head. Very sturdy and i liked the versatility of moving the centre column horizontal. Good bit of kit.
I went a slightly different route. I went for some Giottos legs with a mafrotto head.
I originally wanted the 055 legs but the giottos by my crude tests was more rigid, cheaper and to my knowledge as well built as the manfrotto.
I too moved from a cheap Velbon tripod and havent looked back.
Thumbs up from me for the Redsnapper, it basically has everything you could ask for in an aluminum tripod. Although the Manfrotto legs are damn fine, the Redsnapper has a lot more bundled extras that would throw the price of equivalent Manfrotto legs way up. And yes, the Redsnapper legs are that good. I can promise you the quality is up there despite the lower price tag, you wont be disappointed if you get the Redsnapper tripod.
Recently purchased a Redsnapper ballhead and some Manfrotto 190XPROB legs and I'm very happy with both. I would recommend the ballhead even if you don't go with the tripod legs from them.
