Sorry a newbie question :(

I'm going to be doing a beginners photography course in the new year, and have bought a Canon 400d body

:help: At the moment I'm not sure which lens to buy - i want to photograph landscapes and my pets outside but also possibly inside at dog shows

I have made a bit of a shortlist from reading around on the internet and this forum, but wondered what other people think?

Any recommendations for a good starting out lens?

Your price range is not stated. As a general tip buy the best lens you can afford to suit your purposes.

Hi Chloe

Tricky without an indication of budget - for the landscapes & dogs a good zoom range of say 20-100mm should be good; but the dog's inside bit could mean you're after a wide (small number) maximum aperture such as an f2.8

Basically, the wider the zoom range the more you pay, the wider the maximum aperture the more you pay, put those two together and you're spending a small fortune - unless you're loaded, you may need to compromise somewhere

Give us a budget and a Canonite will be along soon enough with a suggestion or two

thanks for the replies, i can appreciate i will have to compromise somewhere - probably mainly what i would be photographing is animals outside

its not much of a budget but upto around £150

:)

for £150, all i could think of for you is buying 2 lenses, one being the sigma 18-50 F3.5-5.6 and the other being either a canon or sigma 75-300mm, they aren't brilliant lenses, but you won't get a brilliant lens for your budget, i had both of the lenses i mentioned to start with, (sigma 18-50 and the canon 75-300 non usm) and they are alright to start with until you can afford better and it also covers most of the zoom range.

You shoud get both lenses used for less that £150 btw :) New will just be over budget.

Chloe,

We're probably all in the position whereby we can't afford the lens or lenses that we need....longer, faster, whatever.
The danger is to use the available funds and end up with the wrong lens....you still need the one you wanted but are even further away from getting it.

£40, or thereabouts, should buy you a used EF-S18-55 ("the kit lens") that will get you started....you'll recoup 70-80% on resale in the future and that's not too much to lose.

At this point you should give yourself a little time....to save and assess what you need. Maybe an EF28-135 IS would move you onwards, be fast enough for your indoor shots and long enough for your outdoor canine stuff...they're close to £200 secondhand (do'able now?....if so, it's a good move to go straight in with this).

Post a "wanted" on here and see what you're offered....you may be pleasantly suprised....I'm sure you'll buy safely as there aren't many rogues (other than me!)

Bob

Thanks for your replies and advice they have definitly given me something to think about and look into further :)

Initially I was thinking of getting the EF-S18-55 "kit lens" and/or the EF 28-105mm USM, but as i said before i am very much a newbie when it comes to SLR photography

:)

Ive just picked up a sigma 17-70 for £125 s/h and its like new + great image quality , you can get a new one for aroud £200 well worth the money
