Hello All,

I am Edward K. Jellytoes - EK to my friends. Just purchased a digital camera (SONY a900) and naturally I am joining a few of the more active sites.

I am interested in wooded forest scenes and close-up flowers.

Best Photo Book read so far: Bryan Peterson's "Understanding Photography Field Guide"

Dissappointment with this site: I naturally wanted to find a couple of lenses to go with the new camera but find I can't buy anything until 60-days after joining and making 25 posts..?

I would understand if I had just joined and immediately wanted to sell something....but I just want to buy something. Is this some procedure to make sure "old" members get first DIBS on items for sale?

Does this make sense to the rest of you? Can you please explain it to me so I can learn?

Many Thanks,
EK

have a quick read of THIS, it will explain all.

No.. it's because (as I understand it) the classifieds are provided as a favour, whereas the purpose of the site is the free exchange of advice and ideas. The buy/sell thing is just a bonus.

There's plenty of places that just do the buy/sell thing (Ebay, Gumtree, etc). One of the advantages of a site like this is that when you do use it to buy/sell there's at least a minimum level of commitment to the site that might be interpreted favourably by either a buyer or seller as a degree of reliability.. now if the site was just opened up straight away, it'd be no better than Gumtree. Which is probably why you'd like to use this site instead of Gumtree.

The whole point of the restrictions on Classifieds access is that they are a perk for contributing members, you've just joined and your one and only post is complaining that you can't get the perks of membership without contributing.

If you're just looking for somewhere to buy camera gear then there's a place called Ebay that should fulfill your needs ;)

Welcome to TP

You'll understand once you've been around a while as to why the forum is set up the way it is, so you'll have clocked up the 25 contributions to the forum discussions and 60 days before you know it, especially as you are choosing to join the active sites

...Might have known...a knee-jerk reaction and you didn't even bother to contribute to the poll!

Another "long-timer" suggested it was to prevent newbies from..."rushing in and bagging a bargain":nono: (which should have been hyphenated by-the-by).

....and P.S.....many times new comers can see the problems that old-timers simply accept....nothing wrong with improving.

And to save you the trouble...I'll drop you guys like a hot-potatoe (ADMIN Please disable my account) and go someplace where they don't discriminate...Ya'll have a Very Nice Day amongst yourselves.

well you did ask

and the reason its like that is so that

a) buying/selling is a perk for contributing members not a right

b) we know (or at least have a reasonable suposition) that both parties can trust the other, which is the one thing that makes classifieds different to ebay/gumtree etc

and btw the reason no one is selecting anything from your poll is because all the options are predjudiced *****, strike me that you'd have had a better chance of a freindly response if you hadnt already made your mind up before you posted the poll

and btw theres no E on the end of 'potato' , unless your name is Dan Quayle

Sorry, but I take exception to that comment, as I said the Classifieds are a PERK for contributing members, your sole reason for joining appears to be to gain access to them without contributing a thing to the community.

As for not contributing to your poll, it is completely biased towards your dummy-spitting position, so can't be answered without agreeing with you....

Welcome to TP!! Welcome to a properly nice forum :D

My 2 cents though; I personally respect the system, but I feel as if the mean time on which you spend on the forum should dictate your position in being able to sell stuff. For example, the 25 posts things is fine, but the 60 days is a bit elongated. It would been cool if you could get clearance from the administrators after actually going on a meet or something. That way, it proves you are a real person and have alot of time and respect for photography instead of wanting to bleed the wallets of passionate photographers dry.
(I'm one to talk though, I emailed the site admins last night asking if I can wait 30 days, not 60 because I want to sell my ring flash in order to get something else camera related instead! haha)

More of a troll than poll

As has already been explained. The classifieds here are provided as a perk for contributing members. We are not a bring and buy sale, nor are we Ebay. Hence the 25 posts & 60 days restriction. Sorry that doesn't meet with your approval, but frankly, tough :)
