Yes
We're struggling to look at where to stay for our anniversary trip. New York is expensive enough but picking a good hotel seems to be a struggle. I tend to go by TripAdvisor reviews (and start with the lowest rated reviews to get a feel for things).

Budget is around £1000 for four nights.

Where do you suggest?

Stayed at Park Central, Hotel Chandler and Marriott Marquis.

All were fine and think in your budget. Chandler was the nicest, Park Central was well located but wouldn't stay at the Marriott again as in Times Square

We stayed at the Hilton on Lexington and 51st, quite central for most things but the subway is fine for getting around.
We booked through booking.com, you can put in a price you want to pay per night etc Be prepared, food and drink is very expensive

Yup I think I saw your post in one of the threads when I looked. Loved the look of Hotel Chandler but swmbo wasn't keen for some reason.

Yeah I thinking about staying somewhere in the middle of Manhattan that meant we could just catch a subway in any direction to sight-see.

That was a good location to be honest. 10 min walk to central park, trump tower, Grand Central, rockafella, a little longer to times square, but lots to see. You'll be surprised how small the blocks are to walk. I walked from ground zero to central park in about 90 mins.
If you go there don't eat breakfast there, there's a really good place next door does great breakfasts, you name it - they've got it.
Also check out 3rd ave for cheaper places to eat, Irish bars etc.

Also - who are you flying with?
We flew Air Lingus - if you transit through Dublin (1 hour stopover) you can clear US immigration there, much faster (20 mins) and you walk straight off the plane, collect your bags and straight out the other side.

Yup going with them. Didn't want to pay extra for direct, but didn't see the point of a cheaper flight to Brussels or Frankfurt and then to US. Didn't realise it was that quick.

Sorry I was referring to getting off the plane. Last time I went to the US, we went to Vegas and had a good couple of hours getting off the plane, through customs etc.

I booked around June last year for this march. 4 nights at the renwick, HRW flights with virgin as a package through expedia, £1280 for both of us.

Wife would prefer a hotel over airbnb.

I think we need a good location. Wanting to avoid Times Square but need to be good enough to access most places we would visit easily. Other than that, just need clean, comfortable rooms. We would probably head out for meals including breakfast. However, would prefer something more than just a Travel Inn-Premier Inn-Travelodge type of place.

I would go airbnb or similar. You'll get a more interesting location for a fraction of the price.

Not much use if you're the kind of person who likes hotels though.
It's worth noting that airbnb isn't a good idea in New York. Homeowners aren't allowed to rent out their property for less than 30 days unless they are living there also. There was a horror story not long since about an old couple who rented an apartment in New York and then got kicked out by the local authority because of this. They fell foul of a neighbour who reported them.
