As above, I know I won't be taking a tripod with me. I have a nifty, a 20-10 wide and a 70 -300 long and a 24-70. 2.8 sigma. Which 2 should I take? Obviously I will be taking skyline and portraits. Can't take all of them I need some space as I will be using it as my carry on luggage.

Any tips
Any other lens you would take, as I might buy it there if the price is right.

Thanks

10-20 and 24-70.
The long lens would only be useful to pick out details. I used a 55-250 to grab the flatiron building and the top of the chrysler building (both atop from the skyscrapers). No point taking the nifty, its only a stop better than the 24-70.

Do take a gorillapod if you have one, you can use it on top of the rock. You can get a ticket for there that lets you go up twice in a day - go up day and night.
I went up the empire state for sunset, so got both night and day up there too.
Both are open until the early hours, so plenty of time. They give very different views so its worth doing both of them.

B&H if you are feeling spendthrifty, even if you aren't its worth going for a quick look around.
If you are in times square walk south on Broadway until you get to Macys at 34th (you won't miss it!) now turn west (away from the empire state) along 34th for 2 blocks, you'll see the green window shades on the opposite side of the road as you get to 9th.
Look around your hotel lobby, I found a little card that promised a free gift with a purchase, I got a small duffle bag.

USS Intrepid has the space shuttle on board at the moment - worth a look just for the ship and aircraft anyway. I assume its re-opened after Sandy.

Remember to walk Brooklyn Bridge.

The ferry that takes you to liberty island and ellis island is about $15 I think, free entry to both, the statue was closed when I went but I think you have to pay to get to the very top ? not sure.

If you wish to go to the WTC site you need to book ahead, tickets are free (although I think there is an entrance charge for the museum - was not open when I was there).

I walked as much as possible - no point sitting on a train when you are exploring a city! But the subway system is dead easy to figure out. You can buy a "pay as you go" kind of ticket. I forget what its called but you buy a card and put say $10 on it and then just use it until you've had $10 worth of trips.

Thanks Craft:thumbs:
good tips, im trying to work out what B&H is.

B&H is a camera shop http://www.bhphotovideo.com/

They have expanded into audio/visual stuff. The shop is huge. Its worth a visit just to see the conveyor belt system!
Have a look: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dmN6pBEfSIQ

Note the owners are Jewish and as such the store is closed Saturdays.

Note, from another thread I learnt that Liberty Island is still closed after hurricane Sandy. I don't know when it will re-open.

You would probably get away with just the 24-70mm.

Hi, You state "as I might buy it there if the price is right"
Look at the exchange rate, the TAX you pay in the UK. The price of the actual item/s even software in the USA and take your credit card.
Have a good holiday!!!!!
Russ

You'll definitely need the 10-20mm if you want to take architecture/building shots. The 24-70 for everything else.

when we were there in September lots of Brooklyn Bridge was covered in tarpaulin so if you do go take your shots from the brooklyn side as the manhattan side is vertually lost due to the sheeting if its still up.
Staten island ferry is free and you get good shots of the statue of liberty and of lower manhatten. The library next to Bryant park is worth a walk about and you can shot the rooms so long as you do not use flash, and just along the road is grand central station.
Worth checking the adorama site to before you go to see what offers are on and you can pre order to pick up.
as others have said the 10-22 and 24 -70 as there are some great buildings to shoot if thats what you like, also take a walk along the skyline it runs from about 14th street to 34th street and give an alternative view to some buildings and you get some great street shots from up above.
Enjoy

Defo stick the 10-22 in your bag my biggest regret was not having a wide angle with me, wish I was going again great city
Hope you have a brilliant time

I would look at the focal length EXIF data from a large random sample of your shots,
see what you use most and take the lenses that cover the majority.
It's your style of photography that you shoot, and that probably won't change on any particular trip.
When I went to NY with my DSLR I just took a walkabout 18-200 and found that for my style of exteriors, I used the longer end a lot and never wanted for anything wider indoors.

Great thread.... I'm heading over at the weekend and was thinking the same thing
