Hi all,
Im off to New York in a few weeks time, Ill be lucky enough to be there for the 4th of July celebrations and hope to photograph some of the fireworks.

I read that tripods aren't allowed in New York but I cant find a clear answer whether that is a general rule that applies to everyone or whether it is only for commercial people?

Also, are SLRs allowed to be taken up to the observation decks in both the Top of The Rock and the Empire State Building? In both their websites, it says professional cameras aren't allowed.

I would really appreciate it if those that have been to New York can answer my questions. I need to start planning my holiday and I cant wait to get there. :D

I have recently been, no tripods allowed in Grand Central or on top of the observation decks, although I was not aware in Grand Central station, the security guard/staff advised me I could not use the tripod but allowed me to take a few picks anyway. I found it to be a very camera friendly place, enjoy.

Three years ago I took my tripod up the Rock without a problem, as did lots of other people at the time. There's always conflicting advice on this place. Empire - no. They took it off me and stored it.

I had just visited and did not go to Empire but went to top of the rock, they had their own photographer with a tripod who charged to take pictures. They had stated that we were not allowed to use tripods but could take pictures as we please without a tripod. Chance it, you never know.

I was there last month, Empire state is fine although I did get asked if I had a tripod at the security check, I just said no even though I did have a small desktop tripod in my bag. I did see someone using a tripod in Grand Central but not sure if they had a permit or not.

Both the Top of The Rock and Empire State Building websites say that tripods aren't allowed so Im not going to be taking a tripod up there, maybe just a gorillapod or a beanbag like damoblack suggested. Regarding tripods I just wanted to know if it was possible to use them in general in NY (without this so called license)?

Thank you everyone for the replies

I only saw 2 people with tripods, once in Times Sq and one at night at Brooklyn Bridge Park. I had an Optera 230 and clamped it around railings.

Yes you can, I used mine on the Brooklyn Bridge, but be mindful of the runners, they get awfully frustrated if you have set up in their way.
