New Wildlife lens

Which 70-300 are you talking about? The f4-5.6 IS USM, the f4.5-5.6 DO IS USM or the f4-5.6 L IS USM?

I had this canon lens on my 40d,it was an ok lens but found it a bit soft at full zoom. If you want it for bird photography it can be a bit short on zoom. I replaced mine with a sigma 150-500 OS which I bought second hand from here, much better IQ and lenght for not much more money! Only drawback is its a lot heavier, the canon is very light compared!

Depends on what wildlife you want to pic but in reality other than zoos / safari parks it's not long enough. I have that lens but intend to replace it soon with the 70-300L. That won't give me any more reach but hopefully better quality. For wildlife I have a 100-400L but even that lacks the length needed for small mamals / birds which constitutes most British wildlife.

at the moment, i use this lens, it cant be softer than this one!

I know of a couple of people who have bought the 70-300 only to sell it on 4 or 5 months down the line and go for the Sigma 150-500 instead. They said better reach and better IQ. Not owned either myself but would like a Siggy.

I read mixed reviews on that lens too, i think i need to give it more thought as i dont shoot wildlife that often and i certainly cant afford 1200 pound for a lens, if i could i would stick it on my 5d.

Hi

The Canon 70-300 IS is a cracker of a lens and I don't think you'd be disappointed with it.

The other lens to consider if you don't need the extra 100mm is the Canon 70-200 F4 which is very very good - slightly more than the 70-300 IS -> you loose 100mm and IS though and thats a personnal choice to make, the IS version is another £3-400 extra.

Another thought for the extra 100mm if you don't need it that often is a 1.4TC for when you do need it, although you then loose a stop of light.

Hope this helps....

Sorry, please ignore me while I have a little rant.....

It's LENS not lens.
