I made the mistake of going into a TV shop recently - while there is nothing wrong with the 8 year old 37" tv we have, things have moved on plenty...!

So, anyone got any recommendations - I guess a size of about 47 - 50", and budget of between £500 - £750.
I also want to get some sort of home cinema so will be looking at an AV processor and speakers - I already have a pair of AVI ADM9.1 active speakers with sub, so using them would make sense, so if anyone can advise how I would be grateful !
Again, budget of around £500 for rear speakers and amp, but this has caught my eye if it isn't easy to use my ADM's -

We got a new Sony last year and I went to currys and looked and listened. I got the Sony with 3d but did not get extra speakers as the ones in the set were rely good

Now that Panasonic have pulled out plasma manufacturing, I've no idea who is good. Their displays were head and shoulders above the competition (Pioneer excepted, but they pulled out even earlier).

Guess I'm waiting for a 4k OLED to be a sensible price before I buy my next screen.

Don't buy a new tv. You will only spend more time watching it. Spend the time taking more photos instead.

You need to make sure that your processor has front pre-outputs, and connect those to the inputs on your active speakers.

That *looks* very nice, I would check though how many HDMI inputs it accepts. If you're like me you'll have a game console, a blu ray player, a skybox/PVR of some sort. You want your processor/amp to be able to switch between them all seamlessly.

I bought an amp instead of a "set" like that and the amp comes with a built in radio as well. Also the AMP i bought comes with a microphone that you place on your favourite chair and it works out all the speaker time delays so when you listen everything is perfect. wasnt a particularly expensive amp either, a Yamaha for about £350 if I recall. I also bough an F.O. sub woofer rather than the piddly little things that come in some sets and worth every penny.

I'll be honest I don't really get this, if the telly is still working well for you what's point in sinking £1200 into a new one :( surely there a better things you could put that money to use doing and if there isn't right now they why not stick it into a high interest account so it's at least earning a little for you

Thanks for all the replies.
MWHCVT - I hear what you are saying and cannot help but agree to some extent. The thing that is making me even start to think about getting a new TV is that we have a bigger room now, so the screen is a bit far away for my tired old eyes, plus the kids often want to watch something else, so a second TV in the spare room seems to be the way we are thinking. Add to that the fact that winter nights mean more time watching, and there is also the lure of some sort or surround sound/home cinema.. Maybe I am just trying to convince myself though?

Maybe I should look at getting the sound sorted first.
As for having money sitting in a bank - that just doesn't sound right to me....!

I do understand you hell I'm terrible for looking at the money I've have and thing hmm what can I buy myself with that....hell only this morning I received a email about a product I want rather than need right now and it took me a few minutes to stop myself clicking the purchase button

I'm different to yourself as I plan to be out every single dry night in the winter months :D

My Pany 42" is almost 7 years old now - still going strong, but I too have a niggle at the back of my head for a new one...... After all, it's "only" 1040i, but as I only have a DVD player, not BR, that's not a huge problem - except, if I do buy a 1080p (or higher) TV, that'll mean I'll "have" to buy a BR player. Nightmare!

One thing I have realised - whatever you get, make sure it has as many HDMI inputs as possible. Mine has 2 and I need 3 having just bought a Chromecast - 4 would be even better!

HDMI input shortage isn't much of a problem as you can just get switchers. Neet do one with a remote control. I have one. Works faultlessly. I have only one hdmi input and 3 things to connect.

Whatever TV you buy, get one with built in Netflix/Love Film/BBC Iplayer/NowTV etc...

About 18 months ago I upgraded my telly. I'd had the old one for about a decade - it was a 34 inch Sony Trinitron CRT set and it was massive. I never replaced it because it worked fine and I wasn't sure these LCD ones would catch on :) I ended up with......a Sony 47 inch LCD (or LED, I get confused). Unbelievable difference in picture and features. Also, the set actually looks a lot nicer.

As for high interest accounts.......any you'd recommend? Can't find anything sensible over about 3%.

Well with HSBC I get a 12 months saving account that pays 8% for upto a £3000 total saved in it...that's not to bad

That said it only pays that much as I've got a paid account with them..

I used to work for Sony. I remember helping a guy lift a brand new "large screen" TV off the van. It weighed 90 kilos.

Decent sets though. But the new one is the best home TV I've seen.
