:love: Just bought myself a 300mm f4! :woot::woot:

Talk about snap decision.....have I done the right thing? Second hand, mint condition, c/w pouch, hood, and tripod collar - a shade under £500 delivered. :D:D

A nice lens it is too Robyn....small enough to be truly portable yet it still does the business in most situations.

Bob

It won't annoy the cat much though !

Cheers Bob - I've not even much considered the weight - it's something similar to the 100-400 isn't it? I know that's hand-holdable without any problem so this should be fine. I'm all excited now! Must remember to take the camera to work on Thursday!

(The cat probably deserves some time off for good behaviour really!)

I can't see you've done anything wrong there!

It's about 20% lighter than your 70-200/2.8 IS so, if you're okay with the zoom, this'll be a doddle.

Very good lens. That plus the 17-40 L are top priority lens wise. The 300 works flawlessly with the 1.4x Canon extender as well apparently!

...

Very interesting time for the post Robyn. Have been offered a 300 2.8 by a current pro-tog I know... He's asked me for an offer.Any ideas where to start ?
It depends whether it's the current IS model or the earlier non IS one - huge difference in the asking price.

Right thing ... :suspect: ... don't be daft Robyn of course you have ... :D

Any new toy always has to be a good decision imhgo ... ... congratulations ...

I'm sure you'll both be very happy and have fun together and we will eagerly await the first impressions and images ... ;)

:p

A handy link there - thanks for that Neil. Keep us informed on your progress with that 300 f2.8 too - that would obviously have been the dream lens but NOT at that money! To be honest half the motivation for the purchase of the f4 was the fact that at the price I'm paying, I could sell it again next week for a profit! (I'm not going to though!) The chap I work with at Ipswich uses the 2.8 and loves it so if you end up with it Neil I;m sure you'd have no regrets. Better start building up your shoulder muscles though, just in case! ;)

CONGRATULATIONS !!!!

If it's the same quality as the 300 f2.8, you'll get some amazing photos!

Enjoy!
Carl.

It arrived today.

:D

I presume this is the IS version? I had one about 10 years ago with my old Eos 3 film camera, it was fabulous lens and built like a tank.
Looking forward to seeing some pics!

Congrats on the new lens, just bought a new one meself and know you probably spent ages deciding like myself on which to go for. Worst part is over now so have fun with it.

Yes, the IS one. Certainly first impressions are excellent. Weather permitting I shall be making a trip to our (very) local RSPB reserve at the weekend to try it out.

For me the decision was actually made for me in the event. I was wanting a lens which would enable me to get a few more bird shots, be compatible with my 1.4x converter, and also do for speedway stuff from the outside of the track once the light is good enough. Having tried focal lengths with a friend's 100-400L the other week, I knew it had to be the 300mm! (Then everyone started posting threads telling me how good the 400 f5.6 was - argh!)

Cheers Adam - it is indeed lovely - and I now have the evidence to prove it! (Once I've processed them anyway!)
