Yes
I hate this part.

OK...Here goes.

I'm 66, retired design engineer, now living in glorious West Wales.

My main hobby, from birth I think, has allways been watches with photography (on and off) coming a close second.

Back in the 70's and 80's I held various offices in my local Photographic Society, The Hornchurch and Havering.

My wife and I would splash around for hours in the darkroom producing colour and B&W prints up to 20" x 16" from 35mm and 6mm x 6mm negs...OH those were the days.

Cameras were Nikon F2AS's, F3HP's and Mamiya C330s 6x6.
The enlarger was a Durst M707K fitted with a Schnieder Componon S
80mm f4 and a EL Nikkor 50mm f2.8 N.

This stuff must seem like the Dark Ages to many of you but I hope that
It means something to a few of what I like to call 'True' photographers.

No offence intended to all the Digi fans, I'm now one myself.

I have the usual compact digi's and am now considering a DSLR (possibly, well maybe) that's when I can understand the focal lengths. It was all so simple in the old days, I knew what 24,35,50,80, 70-210 meant.

But now what the heck is a 18-55....?

Hi Dave and welcome.
I too am a convert to digital.
When I did my own B&W D&P I too used that Nikkor enlarging lens you mentioned. Film cameras were Nikkormat FT3, Nikon FM2 & FE2. All gone now and digital only here.

It's dead easy to work out. The more letters and numbers that come where your elipses are, the more it's gonna cost. What they stand for though

Welcome to the forum ..... only true photographers in here.

18-55??

I asume you are referring to a lens. This is a reference to focal length range of a zoom, 18mm to 55mm. Absolutely no difference to film SLR in this respect.

18-55 mm zooms are often sold as kit lenses with nw cameras. Now if you had asked about crop factors, well that is digi specific.

:wave:Hi Dave - welcome to TP . Don't forget to call into the Film and Conventional section, there's still a few of us left shooting film in there, (some of us shoot both film and dijikal ) and a few new converts that may find your input handy.

hi dave
i think a lot of us have cut teeth on camera club critiques and done the 35mm thing as well

digital is quite fun and so much so i have sold nearly all the film stuff
