Hi my name is Darren and I am new to this website and new to photography.

I am looking for any advice on a good digital camera. I have looked at the Canon Eos 450D. I would be keen to hear any recommendations for a good camera, it would mainly be used for taking photos of my children and when I go hillwalking.

I have a budget of around £500.

Any help would be much appreciated!!

Welcome to a lovely world!

Best advice is to get to a local camera shop and try some out different ergonomics suit different people better!

There isn't a massive difference in image quality between nikon/sony/pentax/olympus/canon

Cheaper Nikons only work with certain lenses though

Canons tend to have cheaper lenses

Pentax/olympus/sony aren't as widely supported for lenses or accesories but are coming along nicely and may well be bit cheaper.

Spend as little on the camera and as much as possible on getting good quality lenses as possible as these will more effect on your final image than the camera and will outlast the camera by years.

Hi and welcome to the forum, there are plenty of makes out there you have to find the one that suits you,
i have a canon, because thats what i had many years ago 35mm film EOS, i believe canon have more Len's to offer than other makers,



Good starting canons are 400D, 450D, 1000D, 40D,these are all cropped sensors. You move onto Full Frame canon 5D and more money, it's not so much the camera body,( the photographic capture bit) as the lens thats important, others will say different, but with a good Len's, photo shop, and a bit of luck you can work wonders,

With a budget of £500 you will get a decent piece of kit, go into a few camera shops and have a look feel, see what you prefer, then if you can pick a good secondhand one there are loads about you can have a bargain as well.

if a camera feels small ask to use a grip as well this can influence your decision on a particular make, and if you have big hands it makes it more comfortable to hold.

Funnily enough, my stepdaughters hubby is toying with a 450D with a camera grip.
He's likes my 450D but thinks for him, a grip would be better,

I must say that's the best advice to a new starter that I've read. Couldn't put it better myself :thumbs:.

Get to the local camera shop. You will know as soon as you hold the camera's what one you prefer.
 
Yep, listen to Gandhi he's a top tog and talks yards of sense.
I started about a year ago and jumped in without taking advice from the lovely folk on here. I wish I'd gone for a 2nd hand camera and better lenses, but there you go I'm daft me.
