Hi, I have decided to give photography a shot and after much deliberation I have invested in a Sony Alpha A230L DSLR camera (hopefully that was a good choice for a novice??) I stumbled across this forum within my iPhone whilst looking for photo apps so decided to sign up and introduce my self, I intend to get started using Photoshop editing tools on my MacBook and also purchased a few basic books to help shuve me towards the right direction but was also hoping to get a few pointers along the way from you fellow photographers :)

Loads and loads of different sections. Take a wander through, check out stickies for each forum you're interested in and don't forget there's a Tutorials section, too :)
And of course, take loads of pics, ask loads of questions and listen to even more answers ;)

Sony seem to offer good specs on there SLR's so im sure you will be happy with it, good quality lenses are more important than the body in many cases so worth you reading up on getting a good lens for your type of photography...

1. Set aside 8-10 days to look at Flicker solidly - find the Alpha groups!
2. Buy Understanding Exposure by Brian Peterson - 5* amazing book
3. Dont leave your camera at home, ever
4. Sell a Kidney as you will soon get lens lust (plus lots of other equipment, tripod, flash etc etc).
5. Buy a magazine subscription (or use your Clubcard vouchers) as magazines are VERY expensive if you buy them over the counter

Photography...done!

I've got a Sony A200 and am also a novice! (well 18 months in, but just on my 1st zoom lens :) They are quite simple to use and I got the hang of it within a couple of weeks.

I have found my Sony to produce some really good shots with the standard lens (18-70mm). It produces some stunning landscape/sea/sunset shots. The zoom lens is a whole new ball game though!!

????..I am lost here...the 18-70 is a zoom lens...any lens which isn't a prime and has more than one focal length is a zoom, it has nothing to do with the length or if it comes with the camera or not. To save newbies getting further confused can I ask you to clarify what you mean please to help all involved.

As I said, I am a newbie too

I meant I have now got a bigger zoom lens. Tamron 70-300mm. Im still getting to grips with all the terminology,

NO YOU PRODUCED THE GOOD SHOTS!!!

NOT YOUR CAMERA! YOU!

lol rant over, seriously it's the camera that takes the picture yet it's the photographer that makes it. If you're getting some good shots then you should congratulate yourself and not your camera

 calm down man! I get your jist but some were just point and click on auto type shots :) This forum is teaching me more every time I read it.

Thanks for all the encouraging comments :) I have been studying my books and taking tons of pictures of every day objects and nature to help get to grips with the camera, a little overwhelmed to be honest with the terminology and changeable settings on the camera but hopefully it will click with me shortly :-)
