Hi folks,
Just got a 150 Sigma macro and starting to learn how little I understood about DOF and lighting! I have a 1.4 canon TC, what effect does this have on macro shots..? Also any recommendations for a tripod?

Cheers,

Dunc

I frequently use a 1.4x T/C with my EF180. To avoid having too great a working distance, it's better to add a 25mm extension tube when using this combination....brings your minimum focus distance back to something reasonable.
The better altenative to the T/C is to simply add 50mm of tubes. This will give you slightly greater magnification than 1.4x and has the added bonus of not adding glass in the light path. The working distance will be reduced though.

Hi,
Thanks for the info and tips. Is there a tripod/head which allows you to move the camera back and forth for micro focussing?

Hi again,

Joe, I have to disagree about the working distance remaining unchanged. The minimum focus distance is the same and hence the working distance is reduced by the length of the T/C's body....I believe.

My focus rail looks like this...

Sorry, thats what I meant! I get focusing distance and working distance confused.

Focusing distance is from the sensor (or thereabouts) and working distance is from the front of the lens. Is that correct? :)

Yes, that's it. The working distance is the focus distance less the amount of stuff...lens, t/c and tubes between the sensor and the subject.
