I am new to dslr and do intend to go on a course on how to use my Canon 500d in manual mode. On Saturday night i am going to a wedding party and would like to take some photos of the evening. If i stay on auto mode is there anything i should look out for with all the movements and flashing lights?
Is there any manual mode that i could use which would be simple to do?
I am a complete novice to photography other than point and shoot so any tips or suggestions appreciated.

Hi caddie, If you are totally new to DSLR shooting and totally unfamilier with iso shutter speed Av, Tv, and P modes I think the dreaded full auto will give you the best chance of reasonable results bearing in mind the subject and timing.

I think that's good advice.

I disagree with those that say using manual straight off is a good way to learn - unless you enjoy learning the long and hard way, by your mistakes. Which you will make.

It's much better to use the auto modes, see what you get, be encouraged by success and learn what the camera is doing and the effect that different settings have. Then you can take over a bit more control, one thing at a time.

Experienced photographers do not use manual as a matter of course, it's just one of the options that will get used as and when it's appropriate. I use Av most of the time for general stuff, as I think the majority do.

Thanks for all your advice. I will go with Auto modes for now. I have just signed up for a course in December just in time for my holidays so until then i will play around with different modes and continue to read all the great advice on here.
Thanks again.
