Hi guys, am an international student new to Cardiff. I love photography but I've been spending the past few days settling into the city and the country and haven't had the time to explore.

A few questions:
-What are the MUST VISIT locations here in Cardiff for photography?
-Is the cardiff castle worth paying for?
-Are there any street photography laws that I should know about here?

Thanks!

Hi and Welcome, generally you'll be ok around the City Centre, the security can be a little annoying occasionally around Cardiff Bay as parts of it is privately owned but keep shooting until someone says otherwise. The castle is interesting and I recommend getting the castle key card £5 which gets you unlimited entry for 3 years if you can prove you live or Work in Cardiff.

Wales is famous for castles - just a short trip by bus or train takes you to Caerphilly - with one of the most famous Welsh castles. Another is Castell Coch - but that's easier to reach by car. Cardiff Bay has lots of opportunity with the Norwegian church, opera house and the coal exchange building.. Street portraits can be gotten around Queen Street in the town centre.. Usually as long as you don't get in people's way, there's not normally an issue with photographing anyone or anything as long as you're on public land. It's just private property you have to observe the land owners rule. It's usually clear if you can't take photos....

Thanks guys!

An embarassing question though: How do the busses here work? Do I just wait at a bus stop and hop on to the bus that is heading the direction that I want to and pay in cash or do I have to buy a special card?

You can pay in cash, £1.80 for a single or £3.60 for an all day ticket, there's the iFF card which you can top up money on and just swipe it each time you use it or the slightly cheaper option, download the iFF app to your phone and pay with your bank card which gets you cheaper tickets.

Cardiff bay is good as mentioned before, it's interesting at night too, I've been there lots of times and never had any bother with security.

If you enjoy wildlife photography then Forest Farm to the north of Cardiff is a must, lots of variety there, some great hides to use too. Chris.

Get out of Cardiff and into Swansea! Lots of nice views round the marinas, the bay, and the pier!
