Has anyone tried one yet?

According to photozone.de's review:
"...starting at f/4 it beats or at least matches alternative products including the more expensive Canon EF-S 17-55m f/2.8 USM IS."

I'm trying to make my mind up between the Tammy 17-50, Sigma 18-50 (both a fair bit cheaper), and the new Sigma. Considering the review I dont see the need to fork out even more for the Canon glass.

me at the moment -->:bonk:

I have the Tamron 17-50 and this new Sigma is meant to be even sharper and has OS, certainly looks promising but I'd like to see another review of the Sigma before I commit to buy.

well as you not have what body you going to put it on ( might help to fill in your camera bag) I have used the 17-55 f/2.8mm USM IS on both 50D's and 7D and it a hot lens I understand and believe it that the glass is as good as L glass, but as its a EFs it cant be a L glass If you need to open up it sharp at f/2.8

Sorry Chaz! I'm a relative noob, both here and in terms of photography.

I have a 1000d that I've used for the past 2yrs and have really enjoyed it. I see no reason to upgrade it yet (it's more than good enough for a rank amateur like me). I only have the kit lens and the nifty fifty, but have taken some pics that I (at least) am very happy with.

I've just purchased a Tokina 12-24 as I quite enjoy landscapes. I'm now after a walkabout that is relatively good in low-light, and ideally has some form of stability - having used the kit lens (18-55is) I have learnt to appreciate the IS in the evenings. I'm happy with the 18-55 IS but having seen various Tammy & older Sigma pics I realise I can get better IQ, and a faster lens, without having to spend an absolute fortune.

Hope that makes some kind of sense!

Around £500 - interesting lens as an option to the big boys' offerings. If it's sharper than the Tammy it's a good prospect, although it's about £200 more, which I can only think is down to the inclusion of OS

On my 400d, I hired the Canon 17-55 f2.8 for a particular event, and was blown away by how good it was. I couldn't afford to buy one at the time, so I bought the non 'OS' Sigma 18-50. Whilst not quite to the standard of the Canon lens, and obviously lacking an image stabilisation system, it was still very good indeed and well worth the £230 I paid for it.

L glass isnt just about IQ, its about a variety ofother things too, including build quality. The 17-55 is an excellent piece of glass, its not L quality though. Itll be interestimg to see what the new 17-50 is like im that respect. :)

I will be replacing my Canon 17-85 f4-5.6 IS USM when funds allow and was going to go for a Canon 17-40 f4L but after seeing examples and reading reviews i think this could be the one. It has an extra 10mm, f2.8 and OS which makes it a no brainer seeing as it's a similar price to the Canon.
