Hi,
A double question, I'm looking for new locations to take pictures in Nottingham and North Devon or surrounding areas.
I keep using the same locations when I visit and need new inspiration.

Read some maps, take a drive..

(if you're looking for suggetions for different places you may need to tell us the usual places..)

Thanks Alastair,
North Devon: I usually go to locations close to each other like Westward Ho!, Instow & woolacombe.
Nottingham: attenborough nature reserve, canel, Beeston Weir.
I know using maps and driving around it the best thing but at the same time so is word of mouth.

They're not my neck of the woods, but something I do with unfamiliar areas is a couple Google Image searches, in your case these would be
  • north devon landscape
  • north devon landscape painting
These two give results that would have me marking Lynmouth harbour, the Hartland Peninsula, Tawstock church and Blackchurch Rock on my map for visits (two of these from the painting search, two from the more open search which is dominated by photographs).

Are you after landscapes?
Try going around Wollaton Park, they have a mix of landscape, bit of wildlife and some museums.
Or g further South to Bradgate Park in Leicester

Depends what you want
National Watersports Centre at Colwick-Canoe Slalom ( from Memory)
Industrial Architecture-Papplewick pumping station
Nottingham Castle and the interiors of some of the Pubs ( Trip to Jerusalem)
Newstead Abbey
Southwell Minster and the old Workhouse while you are there
Some of the modern University Buildings near the Old Players Bond ( and its on the tram route)
Rufford Abbey

Travel a bit Further
Tramway Museum at Crich
Then out into Derbyshire

Have you visited Lundy Island, day trips or overnight available, coast views on the boat, maybe dolphins and Lundy is just a excellent place to visit and photograph.

Thanks a lot to look at.
I forgot that I go to wollaton park, it's great for Deer and the lake is always a great photo opportunity.
I believe they start Lundy trip from middle of march from Bideford Quay. I've always wanted to go there.

I'm in Nottingham! Do you want landscapes???

N. Devon for me would be Hartland, Lynton/mouth, Valley of the Rocks, Rosemoor Gardens etc.. Of course, Dartmoor isn't too far away either and Exmoor IS N. Devon! The A39 is also quite handy for heading West to N. Cornwall...

Yes Mark, landscapes but am open to all types as want to learn more.

Nod,
Thanks you, I'm from N.Devon but there's so much beauty there it's hard to know where to start.

Sawley marina! Trent lock , newstead abbey , Attenborough park

Are you in Nottingham at weekends? Maybe come out

Thanks Mark, most of my weekends are taken up by the family but may take you up on the offer one day.
Will definitely look at those spots though.
I'm quite new to photography and still not get with settings etc.

The whole of the SW peninsula is pretty photogenic - I've even seen nice shots of Ply***th!!!

Nod,
I'm guessing you can't say the P word? Haha
I lived in North Devon for the first 24 years of my life and loved everything about how pretty the places are.
I just need new ideas....a kick up the behind!!

I can say it but can't say I like it as a city! The Luftwaffe didn't do it any favours and the planners did it even fewer when they rebuilt it. The only good thing I can say about it is that Mr Nick Haden and the neurosurgery/post op care team are excellent and I owe them my life! Oh, almost forgot Cap'n Jasper's burger hut on the Barbican as well.

Ok, here's the kick up the arse. You say that you're after places - you're thinking, like many, in terms of photographing 'things'.

Instead, think about photographing light (& how the world receives & modifies it). This means that you can go anywhere - you don't need specific places.

Also think about focus and how to incorporate out-of-focus areas in the frame.

Just a start.

Thanks for the kick droj,
I like that bit of advice, it makes sense.

Hardwick Hall north Notts, got an old building, gardens, woodlands and ponds, and it's free to get in

Hardwick Hall is in Derbyshire quite near to Chesterfield!
