As a new 5D Mk3 owner i am a little confused by the AF Area Selection Mode and which one to use for what. For examlpe which one would you use for landscapes with a 17-40 lens, and is there an easy way to decide.

There is a thread dedicated to the 5D Mk3 in this section and on the last page there is some discussion on this and a link to a guide, and a comment from landscape photographer Mark Mullen.

For me I almost always use one single square or point focus and make sure it is over the most important area for focus, but I don't usually take landscapes. I think if an area is selected then it chooses the nearest point within that area to focus on. I prefer to decide for myself.

Personally I'd always try to focus a landscape manually, or pick a mid point in your focus area (assuming high aperture of f11 or f16) focus using AF and then switch the lens to Manual Focus to lock it for your shots. That's assuming you're doing this from a static tripod.

I can only comment from my 7D experience (similar but less amazing than the 5D3 AF) and any landscape wide angle images I've taken were basically with manual focus. If you want to simplify the 5D's system, select the zone mode for AF if hand holding. Hopefully I'll be getting a 5D3 in May, so I'll look forward to seeing how you get on with it as I'd itching to get one.

Personally I use single point focussing to focus on whatever I'm interested in then reframe and take the shot. You can set the camera up so the focus is removed from the half press on the shutter button onto the afl button on he back.

I've never understood this thing about manual focus. Back in the day when you had focus aids in the viewfinder maybe but these days the camera is quicker.
