In 10 days time I’m buying myself a new Nikon Z7 II and either the Z85mm f1.2 or my old favourite the Z70/200 (I say old favourite as it was when I started out in photography 10+ years ago)
Anyway I’m going back and forth on whether to get the 85mm or the 70/200 to be used for 100% portraiture without lighting…….. outdoor natural light.
Size wise and cost wise they’re about the same, believe it or not I’m leaning towards the 85 f1.2 because it will fit in my Peak Design 6L bag……. Crazy I know.
Anyway just wanted to ask the gang if they had used either or both of these lenses their opinion on them.
Thanks in advance Neil

I haven't used either of those specific lenses, however, I do shoot portraits. For me, if it's just for portraits, I'd always go for the prime lens, and the Nikon 1.2 looks spectacular, plus it'll afford you a lot more options in changing light etc.
I love the Nikon 70-200, it's a really good (one of the best) 70-200's out there, but given the creative options a fast prime has, it seems like a no brainer to me.

I don't do portraits, I'm just a happy snapper so take this as you will...

One thing I don't like is being too far from the subject as distance makes interaction difficult and things like the landscape and features and other people can get in the way or wander into shot so I'd worry about the distance I'd need to be at and what could go wrong if using a zoom at 200mm. If you've got a good clear path to your subject and you can interact at the required distance or you like a tight framing then I suppose 200mm could be just fine but if not carrying that extra zoom capacity about could be a bit much and maybe that 85mm could be the way to go.

I do have an 85mm shot of Mrs WW framed in the bedroom.

Good luck choosing Neil and good luck with the new camera and lens. I hope you get a lot of enjoyment and great shots :D

They are both stellar lenses. It really does just depend on the focal length you want to achieve. The 85/1.2 is stunning but obviously doesn't zoom.
