i have a nikon d40 and use the original lens (18-55) and do need a telephoto for sports and wildlife photography.

i have around £200-£250 to spend on the lens, thanks a lot for any help

matt

I also have the D40 and bought the Nikon 55-200/4-5.6 to go with the standard zoom - mine is the non VR version and I think was about 65 notes so not too much money at all.

It gives good results but like the 18-55 has a cheap feel to it. Your other option is the Nikon 70-300/4.5-5.6 which new is too dear for you but you might find one second hand within your price range. I would guess this would have the same cheapish construction.

Make sure any lenses you get are AF-S versions as you need these to a/focus with the D40.

:agree: a great lens for the money

I'd save a bit more and go for the Nikon 70-300mm VR. :)

:agree:

If you've got that amount to play with, either save a wee bit more up or get a secondhand 70-300 VR.The 55-200 VR is pretty decent, but the 70-300 is worth the extra.

thanks for your replys,,

the 70-300 vr is £420 on the websit so i might be able to save a bit longer for that

but am still wondering if the 55-200 is anygood

thanks again

Please, could you call it a lens? lens is incorrect.

The 55-200mm VR is a good lens, no doubt at all however the 70-300mm VR is better at all focal lengths. Going back to your original post, 200mm is too short for wildlife, 300mm really has to be the minimum IMHO.
