Looks very likely that today will see the announcement of:

24mm f1.4 AF-S
16-35mm f4 AF-S VR

The former likely to be v. pricey (I'll go for £1500 or so at launch). It is, however, the start of a wave of prime refreshes that at a stroke removes the one area that Canon currently own Nikon (AF-S fast primes at 135mm and below). If the recent 14-24/24-70/70-200's are anything to go by it will be stellar. I know 3 or 4 shooters who will move to Nikon if this 24mm materialises....

i wait with baited breath and hand on wallet should i say on the padlock to wallet

I thought their press launch was tomorrow?

Noooooo!

Skint! :D

Need more Valium for you bank manager Ali ? :)

with a bit of luck 16-35 wont be too expensive :) £500-600 mark ?

Shame I wont be able to afford 24 ....not yet ;>

now have to wait for Nikon to announce replacment for d700 :naughty:

lol Did speak to Nikon about that before I ordered two and according to the nice lady I spoke to there are no plans to change the D700 variants for almost 12 months. They are phasing the D700 changes with the D3 changes. Of course it makes perfect sense to use the new sensor out of the D3x but not until they have converted as many existing Nikon users to the D3x first. Does not make sense to give a cheaper alternative that quickly ;)

it's a shame they didn't make the 16-35mm f2.8, my 17-35 2.8 is a great lens and had a massive following, a lot of people were sad to see it discontinued.

D700 replacement is due this year apparently. Me, I'm after a d400 that has the same low light capabilities of the d3s :D

I do remember we had this conversation :bonk:
Im still keeping my fingers crossed ;)

It is getting harder and harder day by day not to have a camera indoors ;D

But as Yoda would say : Patience you must have young padawan :bonk:

You do know it is actually going to be a 24mm f/3.5G DX don't you Guy?

Must admit I'm very interested in both. I think the 16-35 is just what Nikon need for a lot of the landscapers who want to be able to use traditional filters on the lens (something which is difficult with the 14-24). Shame it's F4 though. I guess it will match up against the Canon offering.

And a 24 1.4 - yes please. Didn't expect it to be quite that much though

It'd stick with Nikon's usual pricing Ryan, check what Canon's equivalent is, then add on a few hundred quid :D

Do you need a f2.8 lens for landscapes? Given that most people will take landscapes on a tripod? It just needs to have excellent flare resistance, be able to take filters and no colour cast.

Also the addition of VR is quite baffling - that would be the shortest lens ever to have VR....

I have a feeling this would be a consumer grade lens, not a 1200 quid job.

that is a downside

Not long had a 18 - 35mm Nikkor. Don't think another 2mm at the widest end will tempt me.

Precisely my thoughts too.

Not at the moment, but it wouldn't surprise me if there's a cheaper full frame model in the pipeline, once the d700 is replaced there will be a lot more people getting their hands on more affordable second hand ones I guess

I don't think there will be a consumer full frame for the foreseeable future. If you looked at the price differential between the D300 and the D700 it normally floats at around £700. As they were pretty much identical ( I know about the minor differeences) except the sensor it seems fair to say the sensor and other FX gubbins added that much to the price. I can't see them wishing to add that much price wise to a consumer model, or the market taking the price hike

Actually, I think there's a good chance tommorow your nice lady will be proven wrong.

It won't be her personal fault though, secrecy is everything in this game. Journos the world over are sniffing for a scoop on this story...

Most likely tommorow we will see one of:

* D700S (following the D3S and the timing is about right, just as she said)
* D700X/D800 (whatever they call it, but a D3X in a non-pro body)
* D900 (probably the outsider in this list, a 18ish megapixel FX non-pro body)

We'll check back and see how my prediction turned out tommorow ;-)

I do hope you are right :bonk:

Since when are wide angle lenses restricted to landscape work?

for what its worth - I think you're wrong sbout the D700S - it doesn't fit with Nikon's upgrade cycle. The D3 and D300 were upgraded after just over 2 years life. The D700 has only been around 18 Months. I think an upgrade in September/October

The D700X maybe - I don't know what demand for this is, but that doesn't mean its unnlikely

D900 Seems unlikely Nikon have resource to develop two FX sensors in 6 months and wouldn't try to extend the D3S sensor in a new body.

but we'll see tommorrow..........

But nikon don't develop any sensors they just whack the sony ones in there

Do you really think that they just phone Sony up and ask what they've got in at the moment? Sony might manufacture them, but Nikon will have significant input into the development of the sensors.

They use the same sensors as used in sonys own cameras? They just rewrite the software/firmware accordingly

No they don't. Sony may manufacture them, but there is a different set of sensors in Sony's DSLR range, as from Nikon's

Ahh, the usual Nikon/Sony debates. If I design a product, then have it manufactured by a company in China, is it my product, or theirs?
Thom Hogan has a lot of intelligent things to say regarding these matters, http://www.bythom.com is one of the best sites for anyone interested in cameras (With a bias toward Nikon ones ;) )

Ahhh sorry, I missed putting the quote in to make my comment relavant.

Done it now!

...and the price went up too!! Now almost double what I paid for mine! :)

I don't think the 17-35 is a lens sold in the UK. Elsewhere yes, you can get it from HK.

The D3 and D3s and D2H / D2Hs use Nikon sensors.

The D3X and D700x (D800) use Sony sensors (Same sensor as the A900)

The D2X / D200 / D300 / D90 / D5000 / D3000 and pretty much everything else Sony sensors.
