Well, after much thought and a two hour tuition session at my local studio I've finally taken the plunge and bought my first lighting setup.
Now then, I'm no master paortrait photographer, but I do want to learn so I've bought the Lencarta SmartFlash 200 twin head kit with two softboxes and a 5-way reflector. The gear was ordered late on Wednesday night and delivered Friday morning. I'm also awaiting delivery of a light meter, hopefully that'll be here tomorrow.
As my wife and son will soon get bored of me asking them to pose, I've also bought a polystyrene head off the 'bay. It's ideal as it has a fairly matt finish so I can practice creating shadows, etc.
I've never considered using a light meter before I went to the studio, but the time I spent there has really openned my eyes to the world of shooting in manual and metering for the various lights used... and I really enjoyed it too
I have a roll of white backgound which I can use for head and shoulders shots, but it's too narrow for wide shots... but again, it's an ideal starting point as it didn't cost me anything
I'll be using my SB600 to light up the background to try and achieve the high-key effect... we'll have to see
I've only had a brief play with one of the lights, but all seems to work well... I'm hoping to set thing up again this evening so will experiment a little further (I've already primed the wife)
Over the next few weeks I'll probably have a few questions and may post some images for c&c, so feel free to help me along the way!
