bought a Sigma 50-500mm lens today for my D200, cant wait to get out and try it, it looks a bit of a monster. anyone got one and what do u think

To have the kind of flexibility provided by a 10x zoom costing less than 700 quid is pretty useful. If you've bought it for use mainly at the long end then maybe there were better options
to be had...especially as far as IQ is concerned.
Ultimately though, if it does what you expect of it then it was a good purchase. Post some short and long shots when it arrives.

I used to own one. Great lens in good light. Heavy beast. I often wish I hadn't sold mine. I think my problem was down to the user and not the lens. I reckon I would get better results now, a year later. This was taken as one of my practising shots across the garden. Its been cropped slightly, not a huge amount.
Oscar wouldn't have let me get near for anything like this, he'd be playing by now!!

Its a terrific lens.
The speed and lack of VR/IS obviously limit it slightly, but thats why its "only" £700.
Don't be fooled into thinking this lens is any kind of compromise on image quality just because it hasn't got Cankon written on the lens cap.
It loses a little bit of bite at full reach, just like the 100-400 from Canon, and the 80-400 from Nikon both do,but don't forget it has an extra 500mm to play with.Just zoom back 100mm from full reach and you're at 400mm and pin sharp.
Having said that, even at 500mm the lens is more than capable of producing excellent results.
EDIT: BTW, don't forget get shutter speeds when using this lens.Its big, heavy and long.The slightest bit of camera movement is amplified 10 fold.

Practice practice and more practice is needed for this lens.If you think you have a dud or not happy with results put it on a tripod and use cable release or timer and you will see how good this lens is.It will be you and not the lens.It does need good light to keep shutter speed up.Also as daft as it may sound as it adds weight try using a bean pod on the lens tripod collar it really will help to handhold this beast.And remember PRACTICE really does make perfect
