Hi

I am looking for a new lens, i currently have lenses which cover me from 70 through to 500, but nothing below.

I have my eye on the Canon 24-105 f4L IS USM does anyone have experience of this lens or have a better suggestion.

It will be mostly used for scenery and close subjects in daylight

I would prefer to stick with Canon and cost is not a issue

Thanks in advance

The 24-105L is a good choice and it's difficult to think of a lens which covers the gap in your range better than that one.

The only other lens to consider is perhaps the 17-40L which would give you a significantly wider view for landscapes? It will leave you with a slight gap in your lens range, but it depends how much that slight gap would be important to you.

I'm in a similar position myself actually with a bit of a gap in my lens range, which I'm going to have to address at some stage.

If you need a wider aperture then your best choice is the slightly heavier and more expensive f2.8 24-70 which should complete your focal lengths nicely.

I was going to get the 24-105 myself as it's a great little lens. Lack of availability at the time and the sudden need for a wider aperture pushed me into buying the 24-70 instead. A very nice lens indeed. :D

I've got the 24-105 and yes, it is a fantatsic lens and has very good IS. Its versatile and great IQ.

I tend to keep it on the 5d for at least 75% of the time, taking the 12-24 and 70-200 for 'general shooting days'.

The 17-40 is also very good but you do then have the 40-70 connundrum......... depends which lack of focal range will affect you most - up to 24 or 40 - 70?

It will be switched between a 1D MkII & a 5D

The 24-105 vignettes on a full frame sensor unless stopped down to f8.

I've only noticed that with filters attached Joe, which is definately a no-no

If you go here you can see how the 24-105 vignettes on crop and ff cameras. The smaller square is the crop.

You can also compare it to other lenses, and you'll see that most lenses vignette somewhat on a 35mm equivalent sized sensor at various focal length and apertures. Kind of goes with the territory of lens design I suppose. How did those film boys ever cope? ;)

Thanks for that

I have until May to decide

My eyesite must be truly appalling, or I'm shooting scenes that aren't as noticeable:shrug: . Either way, the proof is out there

It's a fantastic lens.

I have said this b4 .... that bride shot is amazing.

Keep finding myself looking at it for ages.

:canon:

hi :-)

So do I (although don't tell my mate)!

I'll post another of the bride in my gallery and you'll see how different she normally looks! She is obviously delighted with this portrait. That 24-105 f4L IS really is a fantastric portrait lens. Sure it lacks the extra stop of the 24-70but it's sharp and focuses well and has never been a problem for me yet.

cheers
Jim

Thanks for all the info and i just love the last couple of pics.

I have decided to splash out on the 24-105 and will be taking it to Canada with me in May.

So will post some examples when i return

Thanks again

Good for you - you won't reget it :)

Umm. Might be a better idea to buy it over there in Canada!

Another vote for the 24-105, I very rarley have it off my 350d. Best £700 i've ever spent.

it's great on holiday. I bought it for my holiday in Australia earlier this year.
