Sorry but this seems to be the best place to post as you guys have similar photography habits I'm heavily into sports photography but being ungrateful! Earlier this year I upgraded from a Canon 600D to a 5D3!!! I cannot believe in used a 600D for so long and confused why Canon even built it as the 5D3 is so much better in ever area...... However!! At my sports club with there poor flood lights I absolutely hate photographing people running, and kicking balls wide open on my 2.8 lens and going above ISO 6400! (IS it the flood lighting or camera?) As the noise just sucks! Even so in daylight I appear short on its FPS.... Something I thought would be adequate but having 10 or 12 FPS would give me more leeway. As for my lens 70-200 f.2.8 I'm struggling with focal reach and pray where I sit the better team will spend all their time in the opposition so I can get all the shots I need.

Current funds allow a second hand purchase. Would you canon users.... Get a longer lens or a 1D. My euro millions lottery ticket never comes up so I cant buy both. I was fortuante to spend time with another clubs photographer recently who gave me great critique. His words of wisdom says I can still get good shots with equipment I have. Granted!! But I'm always looking to improve. What would be your next step?

Thanks guys

Longer lens all day long.

I would go for a 300/2.8 IS (no need for the mark II model as these are still £3k plus), go for the older model as they can be had for £2k and under. Make sure it is the IS model though as the non-is versions are no loner supported by Canon - i.e. no spare parts.

If you follow a particular team & sit behind the goal , then you will need to go wider (i.e. nearer to the corner flag).

You can also shoot from the half way line and get goals going in both ends and celes when then turn towards you.

Just bare in mind that a 5D3 isn't as 'waterproof' as a 1D body, so if it's lashing down make sure that you have some decent protection such as the Aquatech SS-300 http://www.fixationuk.com/Fixation/Fixation - Home/D8589F3F-B35E-444A-833E-8B58F9C75A4D.html

Thank you, you're right i think i really need the focal length... to get more in game shots rather than sit and wait for the game to come back to me :)

Go for the longer lens - the only other viable option is a 400 5.6 and 7d2. The 1dx is just crazy money compared with a 2nd hand 5d3 (which you already own)

The 400/5.6 might be fine for summer but certainly not in winter.

If you get a 7D2 you will get the crop factor and longer reach for what you have... HDEW have it for a good price. You might then be able to save for a faster lens and add a 1.4 converter but that might not give you the light... Football fans here will no doubt chime in soon.
