My previous laptop an i3 3110m with 8 GB ram has finally given up after a 3rd HDD and the charging port failing.

I am trying to find a decent replacement to run
Elements 12 including premier video editing software and I also have Lr4, which refused to run properly on my old laptop.

I have had a look round and seem to be struggling to find a decent processor and ram, perhaps I need to be spending more than I did last time. A PC world sales advisor introduced me to a Mac mini which seemed interesting.

If anyone has any recommendations and links, it would be much appreciated.

My previous laptop cost £400

A Mac mini means essentially converting to using OSX, and you will need a monitor and keyboard & mouse too. The software you list will run, but possibly not some other applications (if you used anything else too). You should be asking yourself if you need portability and the ability to work on the move (i.e. a laptop) or whether a desktop unit (like the mini) would be acceptable.

I'd go take a look at what's available from ebuyer.com, especially Lenovo, for laptops.

I don't really run any ms specific programmes, I used open office for anything that I needed. I have a monitor which is a few years old a Compaq tft. Laptop has been ideal in the past as I take it on holiday to sort pics as I take them.

Check out dell outlet, they do some VERY good deals on reconditioned or miss-ordered machines. It is worth checking every couple of days as their stock changes very quickly. I got an i7 with 8Gb Ram for £420 down from £870 in July from there as it has a single dead pixel in the bottom right of the screen. Doesn't bother me and meant I got a real bargain.

Have a look at pc.co.uk. Can spec own machine and pretty damn cheap. Thats where I got my monster laptop for photo and bit of video editing.

Inspiron and XPS - both are good. Even the vostro wasn't bad but cosmetically made a bit cheaper (may not spec so high either, but if you choose by spec that doesn't matter).
